Not into hockey, but even in fandoms that don't need more fans, gatekeeping and trying to use newbies to prove your fannish cred pisses me off to no end. I've been a victim of it several times, including a time when I wasn't even a new fan of that thing, I'd just wandered into a fannish space where no one knew me and someone there decided I was their chance to prove themselves, which required pushing me down in order to make themselves look good. Never went back to that comm again.
