Yeahhhhhhh I don't watch hockey but that's definitely the sense I get from its fans. Like, also in hockey fans' relationship to other sports - a lot of hockey fans seem like they're really deeply committed to trying to prove that other sports are less tough and authentic and gritty, you know, and that's just annoying. Like all those memes making fun of Lebron. Just, you know, let people like what they like.

Definitely has never made me any more inclined to watch hockey, I tell you that.

I've have some unpleasant experiences with hockey fans IRL. I can imagine the gatekeeping culture online... I don't know if it's worse than other sports though because hockey fans are by far the most common around here.

I avoid the fandom. I have a group of friends who are all in to hockey and between all of us, I get to go to several games a year and we'll do a few player signings. But yeah, I've found some fans are elitist and others are super chill and just want to share their love of hockey.

Like every fandom it has its selection of fans who just look for excuses to indulge in their basest impulses and generally behave badly.

Yeah I'm fairly new to hockey (year two of actually paying attention from preseason through the finals) and I just stick to my circle. It's safer, though I do ask not to be included in the RPF group chat lol

Gender seems to play a role in how my interactions with other hockey fans go, but that's been my general fandom experience through the years. Gatekeepers vs creators and all that.

In what way does gender play a role?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-09 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT Dudes tend to be "gatekeepers", this is fairly well discussed across all fandoms. Because I'm a woman, I'm seen as a "puck bunny" or my knowledge of someone's stupid fancy stats (don't get me started on how dumb the +/- thing is) is tested and tested, or I'm just relentlessly quizzed on a team or player's history to "prove myself". Or I'm just assumed to be an idiot and everything is mansplained to me. A statement like "I hate Patrick Kane, not because he's the top goal scorer in the league but because he got accused of rape and not one goddamn person on the Blackhawks organization did anything BECAUSE he's the top goal scorer in the league and he happens to be on their team." will lead to an endless "you don't understand, {xyz bs reasons why the case was dropped and why the front office said absolutely nothing about it}, you wouldn't get it because you're a woman and you're biased." rant.

When I talk about hockey with women, I never feel like any of that, even when I'm talking with women who have been fans for longer than I've been alive. Yeah they rib me because I tend to like expansion teams more than older, established ones, but it's never in a cruel way. I can actually admit that I don't know something and it's explained without being condescending. I can actually have a conversation about goalies without feeling like I needed to study for a week before having it.

Of course, this is not the case for everyone, "not all x" etc. I've sat next to some great male fans at games and I've had condescending conversations with seasoned female fans. But the general fandom trend of "men are gatekeepers, women are transformers/creators" seems to bleed into sports fandom as well.

OMG, be my friend, please! Because yes.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-09 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think as a general rule, men are much more likely to reproduce toxic modes of sports fandom, which is really frustrating

I made a joke the other day about turning Adam Larsson into Kyle Quincey without any tags or anything and man found it though I guess name searching and started explaining to me that Quincey wasn't replacing Larsson, he was more to replace blah blah blah and I thanked him for his input sarcastically and he replied with "You shouldn't reply with sarcasm after saying something stupid" and I was just like "Thanks again!"

It's the WORST, ugh.

this is fairly well discussed across all fandoms.

Most fandoms I'm in are mostly female. I'm not in any sports fandom. Sorry I didn't already know the answer to the question I asked. I asked specifically because I don't see gender play a huge role in the fandoms I'm in.

(I see men being gatekeepers in gaming fandom in general, but I don't really participate directly in that)

I find hockey fandom interesting and also polarizing. There does seem to be this odd thing where if you haven't been a fan through all the ups and downs or if you like more than one team, then you're a "bandwaggoning badfan." There is also a real sense of WE OWN HOCKEY by Canadian fans who smirk and call hockey fans from """""non-traditional hockey markets"""" things like "cute" and "adorable," basically infantilizing us. I think a lot of that is tongue-in-cheek, probably, but still.

And then there's the misogyny. Certainly it is not the only sports fandom with incredibly rampant misogyny, but when a new co-worker learns I am a hockey fan and he starts to mansplain the upcoming expansion draft to me and tell me how it will help the Coyotes a lot (when I can name which players just cleared waivers and who the goalie coach is, and also, he's wrong), it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Someone above also mentioned how hockey fans seem to always try to prove that hockey is better than everything else. I agree; it's small man syndrome. Football, basketball, baseball, and even arguably soccer are more cherished in U.S. sports than hockey, so some fans get so annoying about trying to push it on others.

I dunno, I listen to a lot of hockey podcasts and commentary and it really gets me down sometimes, but I do like the sport, so... *shrugs*

Not into hockey, but even in fandoms that don't need more fans, gatekeeping and trying to use newbies to prove your fannish cred pisses me off to no end. I've been a victim of it several times, including a time when I wasn't even a new fan of that thing, I'd just wandered into a fannish space where no one knew me and someone there decided I was their chance to prove themselves, which required pushing me down in order to make themselves look good. Never went back to that comm again.

I'm sad to see everyone's bad experiences with hockey fandom. I'm a female fan and had nothing but positive experiences with other hockey fans, both male and female. I made a lot of my friends in college through hockey watching. And when I first started watching and I met other fans, everyone was super gracious to me.

However, I've never touched the online fandom. And I imagine (especially after some of the other stuff people are saying) that it's an entirely different animal.
