mlm/wlw

Another weird new slang thing.

men loving men and women loving women. I guess it's useful as a catch-all for gay/bi/pan men or women, but they also tend to be obsessed with moodboards and weird "positivity" posts and generally weird stuff like little rants about how much they love boys/girls with no punctuation. BUT the two must always stay separate, one of the worst things someone can do is post about girls on the boy posts or vice versa.

The atmosphere of suspicion and distrust towards young people in this post is incredible even for FS

It's a perfectly straightforward thing, not threatening new slang

NAYRT

I don't think it's even that new? I mean, I swear I've seen those acronyms around for a few years at least?

You are correct, it's been used for longer, mostly to have a term for those who do not label themselves lgbt.

Mostly to cut out the T from the rest of the LGB movement. Lot of resistance to dropping the T outright, but new acronyms that just so happen to avoid it? Perfect for the Homosexual transphobes and TERFs.

That's probably some people's motivation, but I'm not sure that's necessarily the main motivation. And I think there's an obvious value for having a term that can refer to the totality of women loving women, without needing to get into the specifics of identifying as gay, bisexual, pansexual, etc. That's mainly been the motivation of people I've seen using it.

A trans guy could be a man who loves men though? Same with trans women. Not to mention most blogs that label themselves as for wlw make a point of being inclusive to trans women who are attracted to women. I feel like you are reaching here.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, most of them seem to make a big deal about being trans inclusive, hating TERFs, and not wanting guys who won't date trans guys or girls who won't date trans girls on their blogs.

Yeah this

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-10-11 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean if anything they're TOO inclusive of transwomen. I mean think about it: they make a special note at the end of every post to say AND THIS GOES DOUBLY FOR TRANSGIRLS I mean as if someone wouldn't feel different enough you've got your supposed supporters mentioning your trans status at every possible opportunity. They don't just get to be women apparently.

No, AYRT is right. I have a repulsed reaction when I see "wlw" because it's always accompanied by an annoyingly tumblr SJW style message. If those people didn't invent it, they sure did popularize it.

Right? "People are putting words and picture together that display a part of their identity - BUT WATCH OUT FOR THE SJW!"

Look these youths have come up with insidious new "slang" words to describe things, and they're using these "slang" words for positive posts! It's some sort of TUMBLR thing!

Moodboards and a lack of punctuation are a tumblr thing that have nothing to do with this particular slang too. Correlation vs causation.

Yes. Also, I don't see why moodboards and lack of punctuation and positivity are these, like, alienating things? They're an approach and a style, one which apparently doesn't speak to OP, but that doesn't mean there's something wrong with it.

For the longest time, I thought mlm and wlw were some kind of emoji things.

Re: mlm/wlw

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
personally as a bi woman I like it, because a lot of gay women tend to be...not kind or pleasant to bi women sometimes, and there is some exclusion/erasure there. I like that this term is inclusive.

Re: mlm/wlw

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I've seen so many posts about how headcanoning/writing a character as bi/pan is 'anti-lesbian' and I just....

I mean I could see individual headcanons being homophobic but not just blanket condemning all of them.

Like the first one that comes to mind was a meta-fic about Batgirl coming out as being attracted to women and the meta-fic made sure and included that there are superhero-RPFers and finally the Batgirl Is A Lesbian fans were able to shame and throw out all the Batgirl/Nightwing shippers out of fandom once and for all! And it really came across more as Anti-Barbara/Dick that it did pro-lesbian.
