I gotta agree. Dumbledore was just not a nice person (and i don't really think he thought things through all that well, either).

I think Dumbledore was a nice person, but he was also manipulative, played favourites, and way too big picture, amongst other faults.

All those things. But i don't really think he was very nice at all. He didn't think enough about the people he was pushing around, and i really got tired of the 'must not tell you important thing for your own good!!' crap.

I hate that in any move/show/book, though.

Maybe I have a bit more tolerance for that, or maybe just a tolerance for Dumbledore bashing in fanfics. That makes everything about him tolerable.

I think Dumbledore liked to be thought of as a nice person, and thought of himself as one.

That is as far as I'd go.

Part of the problem with the character of Albus Dumbledore is we can never really get past Harry's view of him in the first couple of books or Twinklie Richard Harris in the first two movies. I think if you come to Albus Dumbledore (even setting aside that line reading from the Goblet movie) first in one of the later books then you get a much more unfavourable picture, even with the continual Harry-vision of him.
