Re: Where/when are you scared to go alone places?

I'd be scared if it was a particularly bad neighborhood, but I also probably wouldn't spend much time in particularly bad neighborhoods.

Honestly, for the most part, I'd probably be more scared walking alone in the country late at night than I would be in the city, even though I know that's not rational.

In a way, I agree. The emptiness of the countryside can be awful.

Since when is the countryside empty? It is full of life, you just have to notice it.

It's so much quieter than it ever gets in the city, and (if it's a new moon) so much darker, and it's just so unfamiliar. I've lived in the city my whole life! I generally know, you know, how things work. In the country, I have no idea what the fuck is going on, and my mind is free to just embroider the whole thing with made-up threats.

Do you live in a country where there is large predators like bear, wolf, or panther? Then you might worry, but only a little, however pretty much anywhere else the wildlife is thinking about avoiding you. That includes the human wildlife too, the local poacher, hedgerow drug addict, and secret drinkers, they all want to not be seen by you either. Especially if they are gypsies or irish travelers plotting to nick some copper cabling or an unguarded farm generator. They'd rather you not see them than get in a fight with you.

"however, pretty much anywhere else the wildlife is thinking about avoiding you"

Unless, of course, it's rabid. That's always a possibility.

That's a very slim possibility. Most people who contract rabies from a wild animal got it from a bat, and fewer than one-half percent of all bats carry rabies. You're far more likely to get it from a dog or a cat due to close contact. Wild raccoons, skunks, etc. with rabies are usually disoriented and while they're aggressive, they're usually not with it enough to actually attack someone. People generally got bit because they approached the animal.

Avoid wild animals that are behaving oddly. And if one bites you, go get a rabies vaccine. They're 100% effective if you get them right after you're bit.

Ehhh, some rabid animals are disoriented and avoidable, but apparently some will go on Cujo-esque rampages where they're not only aggressive but incredibly purposeful and persistent. If you like such things, check out Bill Wasik's Rabid: a Cultural History of the World's Most Diabolical Virus.

Forget predators, running into a wild boar in the woods is unpleasant as hell.

Wait... boar? Where do you live that there are actually wild boar around?

Central Europe? In a pretty foresty area. There are plenty of them around, they keep coming into people's gardens in the winter all the time.
You especially don't want to encounter any females when they have piglets...
