Where/when are you scared to go alone places?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-15 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like a lot of people stress don't walk alone at night because you'll get kidnapped, killed, or whatever, but there's not a lot of instances where I feel afraid.

What's your take?

Some neighborhoods in Brussels, at night. But I've been harassed there a lot.

Afraid, not anywhere I can think of.

Nervous sure but mostly to do with getting lost somewhere unfamiliar.

Only feel nervous in places I am unfamiliar with. The chance of being randomly attacked in the street are extremely low.

It's just common sense to not walk in shady areas by yourself at night (at least not without protection). True, criminals or wild animals or whatever aren't going to be there every single time, but if you can help it, why risk it?

Certain streets at certain times of day, the usual. Mostly unlit or quiet places where I might not be heard if I scream.

I've also sworn off one particular bodega after the owner started telling other customers I was his wife and making references to having sex with me when he got home. I went back once after that and got followed home. So. Fuck that.

Occasionally I'm nervous walking alone at night in the city--but the place I'm most scared to walk alone at night is down the dark hallway from my bedroom to the kitchen. WHO KNOWS WHAT I MIGHT FIND??????

I once lived in a second floor flat that was like that. The rooms came off this long dark corridor at the back and I swear to Magog that the corridor was haunted and at night there was this big dog type ghost that hung out at the kitchen door. It was terrifying. I had to move.

I get freaked out walking down dark hallways, too. When I was little I used to literally run from our living room to my bedroom sometimes because I was scared something would follow me.

And then there was a time when my family lived in a two story house, and I had to cross from the living room through the dining room into the kitchen. The stairs leading up to the second floor were off the dining room, and sometimes late at night, if I was heading to the kitchen for something, I'd take a quick peek up the staircase, just to make sure there wasn't anything/anyone standing up there waiting for me.

I also used to hate it when I'd be down in my grandma's basement by myself. If others were down there with me (it was partially furnished, so sometimes people hung out down there), I was fine.

But by myself? I got creeped out way too easy.

Walking along my daily trail behind my house. It's a fairly well-travelled route for a lonely stretch of bush but I still get really paranoid and I constantly feel the urge to look behind me. It doesn't help that I frequently listen to a podcast that discusses real life murders in Australia where people get buried in shallow graves in the bush.

And the dingoes, and the spiders, and the sheep, and those birds that can disembowel you with their claws, and... Fuck, it is Australia so you are probably already dead.

Streets with no functioning lights, especially in high-crime areas. My former roommate once realized someone was following her and maintaining a consistent distance behind her just as she was about to cross an unlit wooden bridge over a river. (He went away after she pulled out her phone, but she still found another way home.)

Job Centre Plus Office, and whoever is running the Disability Benefits Assessment Office.

Always take a witness and a recording device, not doing so can be deadly.

I used to have to wait for a bus every day in Over-The-Rhine, once labeled America's most dangerous neighborhood. I'm not scared of much anymore.

I'd be scared if it was a particularly bad neighborhood, but I also probably wouldn't spend much time in particularly bad neighborhoods.

Honestly, for the most part, I'd probably be more scared walking alone in the country late at night than I would be in the city, even though I know that's not rational.

In a city alone at night, either alone on a street or on a nearly empty train or bus. i feel less nervous when there are more people around me. As a woman who isn't so good at self defence, even though nothing has happened to me yet, I do feel like it very likely could.

The only time I felt scared walking alone at night was when I got lost in London and kept walking around in circles through sketchy-looking alleys. It took me a while to find a store where I could ask someone for directions.

I am not sure I would go as far as to say "scared", but I am not a big one for being out long after dark. In fact I think the last time I spent time out late, it was before Mum got rid of the car, or it was the time I met her when she came back from a couple of weeks doing sewing for her sister and we kinda hit the post-rush hour bus timetable and had to sit at two bus stations for a shitload of time.

ind you, I also tend to stick to well-lit bus station areas, preferably where there are other passengers waiting. Safety in numbers kind of thing.

I'm basically never scared to go any place alone. Idk. I just feel like in general I don't look like I have anything good on me, and the one time someone attempted to mug me I was just like, "Bro, I don't have anything." and nothing at all happened.

I don't get harassed. I've never had someone try to assault me out of the blue when I'm walking. I just put my earphones in and get from point A to point B.

It might also help that I walk super fast? I'm more afraid to go into places with lots of people around because I usually get mistaken for someone who works somewhere.

I'd prefer to have someone with me if it's dark out, no matter where I'm going. I haven't had any problems yet, even when alone, but you never know now a days.

The only time I've genuinely felt unsafe walking from point A to point B was when I was overnighting in Tampa (long layover between flights) and I had to leave my ultra-shitty motel (which also didn't feel safe!) to find food. It was only like a half-mile walk between there and a shopping complex with a noodle place in it, but holy shit, I really felt like everyone out there was one step away from straight up murdering my ass.

So I won't walk the dog in the dark between 8pm and midnight, but 1am through to 4am is fair game because everyone is asleep.

I'm quite okay walking around the city at night between 8pm and 1am, it's pretty busy still and brightly lit so nobody likely to start shit. But after 1am until 6am is no way.
