Underrated Episodes

(Anonymous) 2016-10-15 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What episodes of your fav series do you think don't get enough love?

Reason I thought of this is because I'm watching S1 X-Files, specifically "Shadows", and I feel like it's a pretty underrated episode. Has a really nice combination of government paranoia and ghost-story trappings. The plot is pretty well done - there's a ton of pieces to the puzzle and it does a good job of showing Mulder and Scully slowly putting them together - and there's good character moments, like Scully being really pleased that Mulder thinks she might be right. Plus, it has a creepy gravedigger for no reason at all, which is just a good thing to do generally.

I'm not sure why it doesn't get a lot of love, except that the telekinesis stuff is a little hokey, and the sets and costuming and stuff are extremely early-90s and bland, maybe more so than any other episode. But I really kinda dig it.

Doctor Who – Midnight
House MD – DNR

Also, underrated TV shows, Monk and Chuck

Yeeeeees, Midnight! There are a few eps of DW I find scary, but Midnight is maybe the only one that really got under my skin. I think it's because most of the others depend more on jump-scares and monsters while Midnight is more psychological somehow. It feels kind of claustrophobic.

Midnight is just terrifying.

The Fly ep from Breaking Bad.

I'm not in the fandom, but isn't that episode widely regarded as one of the best in the series?

It's pretty polarizing, but yeah, I'd say the "Fly is the best episode ever!!!!" camp is bigger/louder than the "Fly was weird and boring" camp. (I'm in the former)

Ayart

It seems people either like it or hate it. Personally I found it a great episode that showed a lot of insight into the obsessive behavior of the main character, but a lot of people said it was boring, I guess because nothing exploded or whatever.

Ok, I'll admit it's not a great episode or even a good one, but I never understood why people acted as if it was the worst episode of anything ever: Threshold from Star Trek: Voyager. You know, the one where they break Warp 10 so Paris and Janeway turn into lizards at the end. As I said, not great, but ST has many other dumb episodes to choose from, so I don't get why people keep picking on this one. I'm pretty sure if it weren't for the lizard thing those last few minutes, people wouldn't even remember the ep. But maybe I'm still just too much of a Paris fangirl to be objective.

Well, in fairness, the lizard thing is pretty... pretty fucking bad. And, like you say, sticks in the memory.

Fusion Cuisine and Joy Ride are my two favorite Steven Universe episode, I think they are the funniest episodes so far. Most people prefer darker, plot heavy episodes though.

I liked Frybo, which is probably the most hated episode that doesn't star Ronaldo or Lars.

Joy Ride is awesome, though.

Remember Me, from Star Trek: TNG. Beverly episodes in general get massively trashed for no reason (except for Sub Rosa, that one is fair game), but Remember Me is exceptionally good. It's one of my favorites in the whole series.

The Criminal Minds episode where Frankie Muniz has a psychotic break after his girlfriend dies, starts killing g people a d writing it into his comic book without realizing what he's doing.

ugh, I know - especially at the end. Just.. here, here is my heart, Criminal Minds, I don't need it in one piece - go ahead and shatter it.

Ooh, yeah, I really like that episode. The ending is so unsettling and heartbreaking. Season 3 of that show in general is so good.

I also like the lighter team bits throughout, with Morgan trying to help Garcia after her return to work, and Reid annoying Morgan with facts about the worst roads to drive on :p. "Don't make me smack you in front of all these people."
ginainthekingsroad: Olivia from Fringe, blueish corridor background, dutch angle (tilted) (Fringe- Olivia Dutch Angle)

I don't think I've ever heard about people having strong feelings one way or another about Fringe's episode "Immortality." (3x13) But I really like this one! So for the first half of S3, there's our Olivia solving cases with redverse Fringe Division. Now, Altlivia is back in her universe and working with her original colleagues again. And their reactions and thoughts about the 2 Olivias are interesting! It's nice to see Anna Torv get to be Altlivia being herself for a whole episode, not pretending to be our Olivia.

The case is pretty interesting too, if super gross. It's some recurring themes for the series-- mad science + mad consent issues, EXTREME MEASURES for theoretically good causes, and human-host parasites. There's parallels to be made between Silva and Walter (and Walternate). Underrated episode in a strong season of a great show.
