*Everyone* is obnoxious about it, one way or another, which is why I wish it would just go away for good. You can't say anything in the fandom anymore without someone making it into a ship drama and like 95% of it is centered around this ship.

The anti-shippers wouldn't be so obnoxious if the shippers didn't spam all the Tumblr tags and try to make the entire Star Wars about their ship etc., and the shippers wouldn't be as obnoxious if the anti-shippers didn't constantly provoke them. It's a vicious circle.

It's almost as though internet social communication sites are largely structured in a way that's prone to explosive and stupid conflicts

I just read a neat article about twitter that I think applies also to tumblr. "Twitter fucking loves your trauma."

Tumblr definitely is, and I often do wonder if it's actually some kind of nefarious sociology experiment.

My perspective - and this is maybe shaped by a political science bias - but my perspective is that building stable structures that incentive good, positive, fruitful interactions and outcomes is insanely hard, especially ones that can last over significant periods of time. It's just really hard. Getting people to not be awful is a really, really hard problem. It's a lot easier to build a structure that people like than it is to build one that's genuinely fruitful.

The way tags are set up on Tumblr is the real problem. If someone posts fanart like the OP's, it's perfectly reasonable for them to post is to Star Wars, SW, The Force Awakens, TFA, Kylo Ren, Rey, Reylo, and any number of other tags. It's also perfectly reasonable for another person to not want to see Reylo fanart when browsing the Star Wars tag, but you can't filter it out.

Step 1: Download Xkit

Step 2: Install Xkit

Step 3: Install the blacklist extension

Step 4: Blacklist "Reylo"

Step 5: Enjoy your filtered Tumblr experience

(Anonymous) 2016-10-18 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not an option for people on mobile, unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-18 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
The Xkit Mobile app says otherwise. It's not as good as the regular version, but it gets the job done.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-18 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but it is iOS only. 85% of mobile users are stuck with the regular app.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-18 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, sorry: this would imply that 85% of Tumblr mobile users are using Android? Unless I'm misreading you here?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-18 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
No idea, actually. Just going on worldwide percentage of smartphone operating systems.

If we're going to be US-centric (just like Tumblr!) though, that does go down to 69% of smartphones that don't use iOS.

I should have clarified that I don't mean just the general tags. That much is understandable, if a little irksome if you want to see anything besides a deluge of shippy content (of particular flavour) without excessive filtering (and yeah, filtering's not even an option on Android mobile).

I mean stuff like seeing (occasionally NSFW) ship art etc. in a character tag that is not always even tangentially related to the content.

It has calmed down somewhat, but during the first half of the year you pretty much had to look at the screen from between your fingers every time you opened *any* Star Wars tag because you never knew what you might see. I can't say I understand the point of tagging your shippy Reylo Gone With The Wind AU art or whatever 'Boba Fett' or 'The Empire Strikes Back' etc. (or literally just every SW related tag you can think of) other than a) attention whoring b) trolling c) both. Bonus points for the content being particularly nsfw or potentially triggering + no warning tags.

And yes, it was mostly Reylo shippers doing that shit. So it's definitely not just moral outrage etc. against the ship itself that causes the backlash. I guess it's starting to be in the same category with some other drama-filled juggernaut ships like Wincest and Johnlock - an uncontrollable typhoon of crazy that blows through the fandom and leaves drama and chaos in its wake. Personally, for example, I'd be reasonably neutral towards the ship if not for that aspect.

*old SW fan is old and would just like to squee about Luke Skywalker in peace without the shippers barging into the tag to start drama*

Literally same. The only unpleasant part of being in the OT fandom was avoiding all the bullshit in the TFA fandom.
