My mother is toxic and verbally/emotionally abusive and I can't take her shit anymore. If I could afford to leave, I would but I have nowhere to go except into a ghetto shithole shelter and they're very dangerous. (I'm unemployed.) I have two younger siblings that refuse to let me live with them even after my mother passes away. I also have 1 close friend in the world that hasn't offered me shelter either (she co-owns her house with her cousin).

I am all alone in the world and in my own family at the age of 40+ and I don't know what to do. No one really cares about me or what will happen to me.

I'm now on Public Assistance and taking courses and will be going on job interviews soon...but HRA makes sure to tell you that no job is guaranteed.

Have you asked your friend if you can crash there until you get back on your feet, or is the cousin against temporary tenants?

Do you have a plan to become employed?

I believe my friend would probably say no. I'd need a car to get around where she lives and I don't drive.

Also my friend co-owns her house with her cousin and so I think the choice to let me stay wouldn't fully be up to her.

If you are in the USA, look into the Peace Corps. Being an artist-in-residence for the National Park service is another option. There are several programs where you work for a few hours a week in exchange for housing (National/State parks, private campgrounds, and sometimes being a nanny). Try calling or visiting your local vocational rehabilitation office.
Try your local housing authority.

Regarding housing authority: I would never live in the projects. Too dangerous.

Artist-in-residence is just one of their many programs that trade working for a few hours a week for housing. I've seen 'jobs' for photographers, authors, tour guides, desk attendants, sea turtle rescue, working in a lighthouse, helping with hiking trail upkeep, working in a library, and more.

I said the same thing... Until my choices were living on the streets, continuing to stay with verbal and physically abusive relatives, or moving into public housing. I never had a problem with my neighbors when I was in public housing. I felt safer there than when I lived with relatives that were verbally abusive.

I live in New York City. Most of our housing projects are unhealthy to live in (lead in paint on the walls, asbestos, broken elevators, lots of crime, bedbugs, and cockroaches). I physically feel safer living with my mother because she isn't physically abusive.

I'm sorry anon. Channel your frustration and effort into finding employment and making money, because financial independence is your only way out of there.
