I'm with you OP.
The Thing is one of the most awesome films ever!
I recently told a workmate about it. He is a fan of Kurt Russell but had never seen the thing. I told him about the beginning scene, where some Norwegians in a helicopter are trying to kill a Husky. Sounds messed up out of context.
The ending is just brilliant!

The Norwegian said to MacReady and the men, in (garbled, heavily accented/pretend) Norwegian: "Se til helvete og kom dere vekk. Det er ikke en bikkje, det er en slags ting! Det imiterer en bikkje, det er ikke virkelig! Kom dere vekk, idioter!" This is translated to: "Get the hell outta there. That's not a dog, it's some sort of thing! It's imitating a dog, it isn't real! Get away, you idiots!"

I love 'The Thing' - it's so awesome, and KR is so awesome, as well. His big, floppy hat! His totally bad-assery! He's a *pilot*, which makes me love him more, and he has his little 'i want to be aloooooooone' shack! Just effing delightful.
