Seriously. I'd been going back and forth on watching this show, but she's smoking hot. I need to watch this.

She's a terrible actress and she's got nothing on Salma Hayek.

I said she was hot, not that she was Meryl Streep.

Every time I see something about this show, I think I should try it. But I've never actually seen any of the movies other than a small part of the third one I caught at a friends house. How good is this show, how vampire-heavy, and is watching the movies necessary to understand what is going on?

My understanding is that no movie knowledge is required

But also, separately, I do recommend watching the first movie at least just because it's a good movie and I think you'd like it and it's on Netflix.

I feel like I'm the only one in the US who doesn't have Netflix right now. I'll check and see if it is on Amazon Prime, because if it is I can watch it on my mother's account.

The first season more or less follows the plot of the first movie (but completely changes enough things that it doesn't feel at all like it's just rehashing the movie only longer)

Even though the monsters are vampires, they're a relatively unique version on them (they're more snake-like), so if you're suffering from vampire burnout it shouldn't be a problem

No vampire burnout here. I love vampires (minus the Twilight ones and the Vampire Diaries ones). They are some of my favorite fictional monsters. I actually feel like there isn't that much vampire stuff right now. Everything seems to be zombies, which I don't like.

I'm right there with you on the zombies.

Well, all the antagonists (up to midway through the second season, where I'm at) are either vampires or humans. The vampires are played pretty subtly at first, only becoming explicit antagonists (and protagonists) about midway through.

I think it's a fun show, and I appreciate their take on vampires

I like the movie's implication that the vampires are more connected to Aztec mythology than European.

Having seen the first movie, I can tell you that it's... uneven. The first part is really grim -- though the movie was directed by Robert Rodriguez, Tarantino's influence on the first part is clear, especially given that he plays the character most responsible for its unsettling tone. The second part, though, goes straight into Halloween schlock territory and is incredibly stupid fun -- pure Robert Rodriguez.

Hmmm. By grim do you mean depressing? If so, probably will wait a while to watch as I'm not in the right mindset to watch that sort of thing. Halloween schlock I can deal with, just not sure I can deal with grim right now.

No, Tarantino and George Clooney play bank robber brothers but Tarantino's character is a nearly-unhinged serial killer only kept in check by Clooney's character. We made a lot of jokes about how that's the perfect character for Tarantino.

Movie changes drastically in tone when they reach the Mexican border, so if you can sit through 45-60 minutes of Tarantino playing someone creepier than he is you'll enjoy the back half immensely.

Wait, they made a TV show out of this? I thought it was just Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez making two movies and jamming them together.

No, I'm making a joke. The first half of the movie is very Tarantino-esque in a lot of ways.

I'm not caught up on this show, but I'd be glad if she's gone.
