Speaking of anime, is there anyone else out there that thinks Naruto, One Piece, and especially Dragonball franchise, really trashed the anime scene and sent it back into the age ghetto big time? There was a point where anime seemed to becoming generally accepted, then those shows -Dragonball especially- came along and it was right back to being mocked as kiddy fare.

Yeah, because anime is such a super serious genre. But they ruined it! No more cocktails at the country club. We'll never be taken seriously again!

We ghetto now.

(Also, the shows you mentioned while saturated are popular among all age groups.)

?
anime today is WAY more accepted among many levels of society than it was in 1997, which was DBGT. You can complain about Naruto and Bleach (though really, excuse shounen for existing, I guess?), but I don't think that series which are not particularly mature existing are to "blame" for the US to treat cartoons as for kids.

This. I mean, just looking at anime conventions where the number of people attending has blown out is a good indication of this.

nnnnnnnno? I mean maybe in 2002 you could say that those shows were seen as childish but that was mostly because the US licensees were still editing out the blood, cigarettes, references to death, etc, and trying to market it to children. they don't do that anymore.

OP isn't big here because 4Kids fucked up the first attempt to bring it over, and Dragonball as a franchise is so old that most of the people still into it are adults who caught the first fansubs when they were teens in the 90s. so I have no idea where you're coming from.

When they edited out the cigarettes and blood, did they edit in the hair styles and goofy facial expressions? The presence of the latter is more a problem than the lack of the former.

I'm not sure why you're highlighting the Dragon Ball franchise. The most popular part of that was/is Dragon Ball Z which started in 1996 in the U.S., when anime was definitely not mainstream.

That puts it a solid decade after the golden age of anime started, and a couple of years after it ended.

...now I'm really confused.

Are you arguing that DB, Naruto, and OP ruined mainstream acceptance in Japan or the U.S.?
