When they suck at writing relationships, specifically. Lots of great writers are awful at relationships! Like, a good example is Mulder/Scully, which was brilliant in all of its subtext-y glory, then...once it went over the edge it was suddenly like they didn't know what to do with them and their relationship anymore. It became stilted and awkward, and the only way to salvage what was left was to break them up for the new season-- and even that didn't really work. The magic was gone.
