Re: So, how about that gaybaiting in Yuri on Ice?

"not torpedoing anyone's ship"

Also, in regards to this argument, this happens with straight ships all the time. With shoujo manga and reverse harem, there will be multiple guys fighting over a girl, and one pairing will become canon in the end. Shippers will piss and moan about this, but the manga still sells.

The reason this gay baiting sells is because it's ~forbidden~ and, in a world where gay relationships are seen as sinful and shameful, people are willing to take subtext in place of actual relationships.

I shouldn't have used the word "sinful." That was a bad word choice. But yeah, gay relationships in Japan are seen as shameful/forbidden.

Not exactly. Gay relationships are seen as unusual, period. It's not about EW, GAYS-- never has been. It's about not sticking out. Straight couples are also seen as shameful if they, say, kiss in public.

Yep. One of my friends is Japanese and even though she lives in America now, she's still hesitant to kiss her husband in public because that's just not something you do in Japan.

I know it's been said before, but the > thing is really unnecessary here.
