I don't think it's strange to have been influenced by fiction, and there are far worse and more embarrassing things than Star Trek that could have influenced you! Anyway, it sounds like it helped make you into a pretty decent person, so that's good.

Yes, my thoughts exactly!

MTE as well, anon!

Well put :). I think the cast/writers would be pleased to know they've made that kind of impact.

It doesn't matter where you get good things from. What matters is the getting of good things, and what you do with them once you've got them.

From what I know of the show's creation, I think that's exactly what Gene Roddenberry hoped Star Trek could be--so I don't think it's odd or embarrassing that it was that for you! This secret is lovely. :)

I'm sure it's a very good thing to be influenced by. ST is so ubiquitous, I don't think anyone would shame you for it.

It probably had a big effect on me too, as a kid. Probably for a lot of other people, too.

I think Trek influenced my ideas about what the world could be. I guess I'm both a realist and an optimist. I'm a realist in the sense of I think the world really sucks right now. But I'm an optimist in that I think it could be better and I think it is actually attainable (if people as a whole start actually working towards it).

I'm pretty sure I'd have never been born without Star Trek.

I only started watching the original series in recent years, but there is something special (and often humorous) about the show.

No shame, especially considering the values you learned (which I think are all pretty good). It's less embarrassing than saying a fictional pirate encourage you to be yourself.
