Film noir!

(Anonymous) 2016-10-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
My work is closing for 16 days starting Monday so they can fix a major plumbing issue, so I'll be off, and I'd like to spend that time watching some good film noir! Can you recommend any of your favorites? Thanks!

This is such a specific plan; it delights me. I'm not a film noir buff at all so my only recommendation is Chinatown. I liked it.

According to Wikipedia, Sunset Boulevard is film noir - definitely recommend that. The Night of the Hunter is pretty good as well.

Yes. Double Indemnity is what got me into film noir, still my favourite. Followed by The Big Sleep.

OH THIS IS MY JAM KIDS

Everything that everyone's already suggested plus:
Mildred Pierce
Gaslight
Touch of Evil (TBH I'm not a huge fan of this one, but it's considered one of the "classic" film noir so it's worth checking out for the historical value)

More néo-noir stuff (i.e. made after 60s but draws heavily from noir)
Following
Memento
Devil in a Blue Dress

I was questioning whether to put Touch of Evil on my list or not myself. I can never quite decide how I feel about it. Other than having Charlton Heston playing a Mexican is always funny.

Most of these suggestions are spot on.

I'd also recommend dipping into Cyberpunk for some neo-noir. Blade runner?

Also, LA Confidential. TW Rape Racism and Homophobia. But if that bothers you, you might want to pick another genre.

And here where I get uncomfortable: Chinatown is supposed to be the toppest tier of good neo-noir. Never seen it myself because of polanski. If you can possibly find a way to watch it without supporting roman polanski in any way, I hear it's very good.
