1. Am I the only one who doesn't have any interest in other people's home improvement/gardening feats? I swear the older I get, the more and more people I know are moving into new homes and gardening and things like that - which is cool except they expect me to care what shade of pink their wallpaper will be. Is it that I haven't really owned a place (so can't relate to wallpaper or gardening or anything), or are most people disinterested, just better at faking it?

2. Either way, how do you feign interest, OR tactfully bring the conversation to something more relatable without talking over the person?

That's sadly how it goes when you're the only one in your age group not doing the conventional thing. Most notably when everyone else starts having babies...

I don't know if this will work for you, but when people talk about houses and gardens, I pretend it's a Sims game. Works for me.

1. No, it boreeeees me soooo much. And almost everyone is doing it. and I'm sitting there being polite thinking "I do not caaaare what material our floor is made off". One of my friends told me that once you get a house yourself, you sort of get it, but my interest in getting a house is also minimal, so..

2. I feign interest for a few minutes, then try to change subjects.
