Any advice for a newbie writer?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-22 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd really love to write fics. I get ideas for them all the time when I watch my fave shows, but the second I should write something down, I blank and don't know where to begin.

Tell me, ye wise ones, about your writing processes!

AS someone who studied writing: it really is not the same for everyone.

Some people do best writing chronologically.

Some people like making little post its with plots point the piece the together as a mosaic.

Some people like to have everything planned out before they write.

Some people like to have several important scenes in mind, write around those and let the characters take over.

My advice would be: find out what motivates you to write. (Is it that salient sex scene? Go for that. A full page description of a river? GO.

Try writing a "sort story" first. A one-shot that is not too daunting. Don't be scared to fail. our first fics will always seem silly in retrospect, because you grow as a person a a writer. And for the love of all that is holy, write something you love.

I think that a one-shot might be the best idea for me at the moment. I always get stuck how writing "should" be this elaborate thing and the fics "should" have 2543 chapters long, etc. I just need to get out of my comfort zone and do it.

Thank you so much for the advice!

Writing a one-shot is definitely easier than a chapter fic if you're just starting one.

If you do want to write a chapter fic, though, one thing I find works for me is to put the most fun part, the part that you most want to write at or close to the end. That motivates me to the plotting/development/build up that has to come before the payoff.

Yeah, that would give me a direction where to go. That's a great tip, thanks!

Take a shit ton of narcotics and then just type whatever thought comes into your head.

LMAO

Dammit, I should have started writing during the debates! I was completely wasted and would have been immensely proud of pretty much anything written at all.

Hey literay careers have started with worse ideas. I think some of them might actually have been started with this one too.

Usually, when I come up with a plot idea, I type it up so I remember it. Then when I have time to actually write I flesh out what I want the plot to be and then write. I mostly write porny stuff. And I tend to start with the sex first and then write the plot around it.

Yup, it's always best to write it, especially for someone like me who tends to get lost in her own head with all the ideas floating around. Thank you for the help!

Did a sudden scene or moment of dialogue come to you? Just write it down! If that's all you get, that's fine. Or perhaps pinning that moment down, making it concrete, will help you write more, build on that moment of inspiration, and flesh out a scene to an entire, plotty story.

Or maybe it won't. Either way, don't be scared to just jot down stuff, ideas, scenes, lines of dialogue, bits of description or backstory or whatever. You never know where it will lead you.

Good luck!

That's something I need to keep in mind since I have this silly notion that the fic should be written in chronological order when there really isn't any legit reason WHY that should be the case. I need to get rid of my "shoulds" and just write.

Thanks for the input!

Yup! There are no 'shoulds' other than please use spell-check. :)

* Read a lot of books. Not just fanfiction, but published books in a wide variety of genres.

* Learn how the sausage is made. It's not fun, but knowing the technical side of what makes writing work helps your own writing: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, characterization, pacing, etc.

* Write every day if you can. Nothing improves your writing more than practice, not tips, not shortcuts, not hearing about other peoples' processes. Write. If you're not sure where to begin, make an outline of the plot.

I think the sausage making is the most crucial part in all creative efforts and paradoxically enough, my favorite/least favorite part of it. After the initial joy of understanding how something is done, that understanding also takes little bit of the magic away in the long run.

All in all, you've made excellent points, thank you!

this comm, although relatively new, has a lot of resources that I've found useful: http://spn-writing.livejournal.com/ (although the comm is run by and geared towards people in the supernatural fandom, the writing advice is almost always applicable no matter what fandom you're writing for)
