I've watched the entire 3 series run of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and I love them.

I've also just begun reading the books, so I do get what you're saying. Hearing Phryne's inner monologues regarding the men she is associating with (and really anyone she comes into contact with) are a big part of what makes them so much fun.

To be fair, that's not a good pic of him. I wouldn't say he's got remarkable features, but he's fairly good looking.

I would have liked to see more lovers on-screen that AREN'T skeevy morons attached to the cases, but such is the nature of the medium--any sex interest has to serve double duty narratively, making it really hard not to wonder WHY she has such awful taste in men.


(That said, you can pry Phryne/Jack from my cold, dead hands. A ship based on mutual respect and friendship? YASSSS. I went into the show wanting a platonic friendship, but the beauty of Phrack is that chemistry or not, they don't lose anything by being romantic/platonic/somewhere in between.)

well I don't have as low an opinion of her lovers as you, but I generally handwave it as most men in 1920s Melbourne having pretty serious flaws so she's learned to make do with whats around. Excepting Jack Robinson, of course. (I am also totally insane for Phryne/Jack)

(To expand upon this, she does have some interesting lovers. And the ones that are mostly off-screen are no doubt lovely. And I love her whole approach to the issue. But WOW when you look at her track record she makes interesting choices--the guy who BROKE INTO HER HOUSE AND GRABBED HER, the guy who is SO offended to be accused of opium dealing when less than a week later he starts importing a large amount of opium...)

Off the top of my head...

Vic the flyboy was great. The Latvian anarchist BROKE INTO HER HOUSE AND GRABBED HER as foreplay. Lin Chung took to importing opium mere days after getting so high and mighty about her wondering if he dealt in opium given the context of their meeting. The Greek boxer was just a self-absorbed idiot. The psychic's manager wasn't too bad. The guy at the winery wasn't BAD but WTF was she doing having sex in a vat of grapes and then making other people drink it? We won't talk about movie guy because HOLY CASUAL RACISM BATMAN. Lyle Compton from season 3 was... well some people liked him. I thought he was a self-aggrandising dick that was obviously meant to parallel but fall short of Jack (the way he treated Phryne made me RAAAAGE)in a way that made him suck as a person and as a character.

I never read the books, but I'm wondering how she could be *more* of a free agent in the tv series?
She sleeps with a new guy almost every episode, even the ones where she's more serious about Jack!

Book Phryne, uh... basically has a Rolodex of people to fuck when she gets bored. I personally find her character in the book to be shallow and unbelievable (and actually quite unpleasant with how she regards other people), whereas TV Phryne is more nuanced as a person. Different people feel differently--the books have a large number of fans--but there's definitely a difference in tone between TV adn book regarding her sex partners.

I love this show!
Never read the books, though (and knowing what the author said about Elementary in the afterword of her own sort of Holmes/Watson fic-like book doesn't really make me want to... maybe if I find them cheap somewhere). Nevertheless, I agree that I prefer Miss Fisher to be single because it's so much fun to see her flirt and have sex with everyone. :D
