No, Anthony was genuinely gross and repeatedly involved sexualizing children in many of his books. Check out this blog post as an example: https://litreactor.com/columns/themes-of-pedophilia-in-the-works-of-piers-anthony

I don't know what to tell you. I am not grossed out. I guess I'm just not capable of being grossed out over imaginary people doing made-up things that aren't actually happening. I gravitate towards the transgressive in fiction.

Now, if you were to tell me that Anthony actually abused 5-year-olds in real life, that would disgust me. I can't manage to summon the same concern about fiction.

Careful not to cut yourself on that edge, nonny.

I don't know if this makes sense, but I feel like there's a difference between transgressive fiction and something like Piers Anthony, which is that you get the sense from everything that Anthony wrote that he didn't perceive this stuff as a problem or transgression. He was just writing about pantylust as though it was the most natural thing in the world for anyone to do. So, I guess that's what weirds me out about it - not just the text itself, but the attitude that seems to lie behind it.

Again, I don't know if that's a distinction that matters for you, but it's interesting to me.

Neither do I. Because it's not real.

Don't be obtuse. This is not a kinky PWP fic, this is published fiction, read by children. There's a difference.

Piers Anthony doesn't appear to understand that it's not real. Kids reading Xanth will also not realize it's not real, because not being able to tell reality from fiction is a major part of a child's psyche.

SA

And there's also this:

Another one of the stories in Firefly was actually written by convicted child molester, Santiago Hernandez, who is possibly one of Piers' pedophile pen-pals. Ironically, this is one of the few non-sexual stories in the book, but that doesn't stop Anthony from questioning the reason behind the man's incarceration.

"But this is another bit of evidence of the problem in our society: as far as I know, Santiago Hernandez did not hurt anyone. He just happens to be sexually attracted to small boys."

I dare you to explain THIS bit away.

I'm not saying the stories shouldn't exist if he wants to write them, but I'm damned if I don't think there's something a little weird and skeevy about someone who thinks that's unexceptional, normal writing material

you worked that into the conversation really naturally

(Anonymous) 2016-10-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... have you ever been in the situation where someone's telling this really fucked up story about something that happened to them or something they did, and you realize halfway in that they don't know it's fucked up? That's Piers Anthony's books.
