I could have written this secret. Currently rewatching Buffy and I still don't like Xander at all. He's the one Buffy character that I never warmed up to.

I like him, but wonder if I would on rewatch. I think he's one of those characters who seemed to vary from episode to episode - sometimes he was the muddled voice of reason, sometimes he was doofy but lovable, sometimes he was a downright terrible person.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-26 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
This. I'm planning to re-watch Buffy soon (It's been a few years) and I'm not sure how I'll feel about him. I think you made an excellent point about him varying, though.

I like that sweater he's wearing. It looks cozy. /random

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-10-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I never watched this but that sweater is disgusting.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-26 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It foes look like it would make the person wearing too hot

(Anonymous) 2016-10-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Never stopped despising Spike myself (and all his woobifying, entitled, immature, self righteous fans) so there we go.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-26 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that sounds like Xander in a nutshell, so I see why you like him! :-D

I can understand you not liking him. I'm the opposite, but I hate, hate, hated the attempted rape scent with Buffy. For me, it was hard to redeem him after that, even though he didn't have a soul at the time.

well, he's one of Joss Whedon's author surrogates, isn't he? so.....probably justified

(Anonymous) 2016-10-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I never in my life thought I'd say this but we may be going too far with the Whedon hatred

Yeah, he's said that Xander is basically him in high school, only cooler and with hot female friends.

I read a very weird but interesting piece of meta about Whedon's author surrogates once, theorizing that Whedon intentionally writes Xander and other similar characters to be unlikeable because he hates himself and feels guilty for projecting his fetish for female vulnerability onto his work while claiming to be a feminist.

IDK if I fully agree with it, but it was an interesting read.

Me too.

I liked him as a teenager because he was written realistically like boys I knew, he was believable and struggled to find purpose as the normal guy among superpowered people.

He didn't hold up as well on rewatch, because my own current standards for not being a complete dickbag don't encompass what was considered normal when I was a teenager.

Why? Indifferent i get - but hate up to the point you hate him years after the show ended?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Good for you. I will always love Xander, flawed though he may be, despite all the keyboard warriors telling me I should hate him for being an awful horrible human being. I think their judgment meter is a little off balance.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-26 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
No one is telling you to hate him, calm yo tits.

I liked xander when I first saw the show, but I dislike him now that I'm rewatching it. Willow too. They're both really annoying

He reminds me of every guy I ever avoided sitting next to in high school. So credit to the writers for making him a believable teenage boy, I guess.

If they'd developed the character more and he was shown to learn from and change his shitty behaviour, then maybe I could have liked him. Idk. He just acted so entitled about everything. Even when he did good things, he wanted to be recognised for them and rewarded.

Even towards the end of the series he was still making joking (but maybe not joking!) comments about having sex with Buffy and giving his unwanted opinions on everyone's personal lives.

I feel like there was one line he had during his "woe is friend zoned me" stage that was just so far on the misogyny that it turned me off of his character for a long time, but he got a lot less annoying later on, and I was able to just go "fuck that one writer in particular."

He's so greasy and repulsive.

[personal profile] thelesbianfuturist 2016-10-26 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
The nice guy thing? Or one of the very many other things?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-26 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised I didn't make this secret. Though I actually thought he was alright in the first seasons and only got repulsive in the later ones. I think his characterisation was all over the place he was always what the plot required it felt.
