Bioshock Infinity

(Anonymous) 2016-10-26 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never played a Bioshock game before! I think I had the impression they were horror so I never looked into it?
But there was a steam sale and I figured it would run on our older laptop and now I'm extremely into it, extremely belatedly. It's a real thrill to play something with more plot and characterization after all the open world and simulation games I've been playing lately.

The first two games (but mostly the first) definitely have a horror aspect given that BS1 is a spiritual sequel to System Shock 2 (which was made by the same developer.) But it combines that with a (rather hamfisted) cautionary tale about hubris, hypocrisy and laissez-faire capitalism.

The 2nd game is the best one by the way.

The only thing funnier than this objectively untrue statement is how mangled it is.

I also think Bioshock is the best of the bunch, if only because it handles the "player character is a parent who guides and nurtures an NPC child" thing way better than most of the games that try it.

I might try the second one if it goes on for cheap enough (I got Infinity for around $6). I get the impression each of the games takes on a set of ideologies, and I like that aspect of this game. I like that I'm not really required to have an opinion, but there's an attempt to ask big questions that isn't totally moronic.

Anyway it turns out I'm fine with horror in video games. I guess it's a context where I'm used to gore and monsters.

Try the first one if you haven't -- it's not really THAT scary (no scarier than SS2, and I was never too scared by that one either) and 2 relies heavily on the plot of 1 as it's a direct sequel.
