Do you hide your nerd powerlevel?

In the sense that I have anxiety, yes

I don't wear nerd apparel or anything else that would give it away and don't bring up fandom unless the other person is into it.

I doodle though and it's pretty anime, so dunno how good of a job I do.

I try not to talk to people in public as a general rule, but if someone brings up something I like, i'm happy to go off.

Only sort of. I wear nerd apparel but most of it is pretty explicitly intended to blend in (I don't buy those awful mashup shirts. "Logically me," no fuck you you can't wear that.) That's about the extent of it though -- I don't talk video games or comics with anyone except people who I know would give a shit.

Only sort of. I sure do in the context of the average everyday gathering, but if I really think I want to be friends with someone it's like the first thing I try to sneak into a conversation.

The best friends you have are the friends who understand your ships, man.

To an acceptable level. It's fine to talk about most casual gaming now or wear apparel with little logos on them. It is not fine to talk about slashing the two leads in the movie you watched yesterday.

I hide it until I get to know people better. At home though, I'm super out and out nerdy, my house is full of random nerdy things. But I try to be discreet about it elsewhere.

I wouldn't say I "hide" it; it's more that I just realize most people won't get my interests. (Although it amazes me what most people just aren't interested in, as well as what isn't as common knowledge as I would have thought.)

To random strangers in the street? Yeah, sorta. In that I don't go out of my way to advertise it.

But as soon as someone finds out I did postgrad in Japan, speak fluent Japanese, and that my hobbies include gaming and airsoft, they pretty much know my power level already if they have any sub-culture awareness whatsoever.

Yes. I'll wear nerdy t-shirts from time to time, but hardly anyone has ever talks to me about them, and I generally avoid talking about nerdy subject in public outside of my family and friends, unless someone asks me for my direct opinion. Which, thankfully, is hardly ever.

I've got one teacher I can absolutely nerd out with--he's a big Star Wars fan--and we share a number of shows in common. In fact, when I've SW posters in book fair, I give him my free display copies. His fiancee is also a bit geeky but she's more Harry Potter. In fact, one of their engagement pics is them facing off with each other--him with a light saber and her with a wand. They're very cute together. I have a couple other people that I can talk about tv shows in general and geek out a little bit with.

But I don't share the fact that I write fanfic, cus I write mostly slash or have made other fanworks. Just not comfy doing so.

I do a lot of exploring for unusual or little-known stories, so I don't meet many people who have context for my interests. I don't hide them, but I don't ramble on if it's clear they don't know what I'm talking about.

In 90% of situations, yes. But if it comes up organically as an opportunity to socialize/bond with fellow nerds, I'll let it out. Even then, though, I tend to hold back a little.

I sure don't wear it on my sleeve. If the topic comes up, I won't "hide" that I like nerdy stuff, but there's an appropriate time and place. You'd never peg me as a geek if you saw me or spoke with me otherwise.

No? But I don't walk around head-to-toe in graphic shirts, either. At work, when we're talking about movies and comics and books, I definitely geek out and share my enthusiasm and whatnot. And i've told several people at work i write fanfiction (another co-worker is also a writer, though not a fic writer, so we talk about writing in general).

I don't hide, but i don't start every conversation with fannish/nerdy/geeky stuff. But if the subject strays to any of my fannish/geeky/nerdy interests, I definitely share.

I used to, but I don't care anymore.

I'll tone down my enthusiasm though, just so people don't get overwhelmed. It's not because I'm scared of what they may think, it's just that making sure people are comfortable (or at the very least, making sure they aren't uncomfortable) is part of my personality

Not really. But it's not a major topic of a lot of conversations.

absolutely not, let the whole world know!
luckily my field is video games, so there's no clash or need to hide.

Kind of. At work they know that I love videogames and playing videogames. What they don't know is that I write homoerotic fanfiction about those video game characters. But when I'm not at work, I do proudly wear some nerdy t-shirts.

I had hid it from age 10 to age 24. Seriously, I was ashamed. I still don't like to wear nerd shirts out in public unless it's for a convention. But the freedom and trendiness of geekdom is something I mostly embrace, because I don't have to worry as much about it now.

Eh, 50/50. Depends on the fandom. I might have a figurine in view at work, that's about it.

and, like, I'm not going to go around pointing out where I was in the middle of fandom versus fringes.

Re: Do you hide your nerd powerlevel?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Not much, but my nerd tastes are considered pretty mainstream these days (e.g. Star Trek, Doctor Who) and my immediate family, most of my friends, and a lot of my coworkers are big nerds, too, so I don't really have anyone to hide from.

Re: Do you hide your nerd powerlevel?

Yes and no. I don't advertise that I'm into fandom AT ALL, and generally when the topic has come up I just sort of play dumb ("superwholock? Oh, is that like superman and... doctor who? haha ha...."). But, I also don't hide that I play a lot of vg, am familiar with various anime, love the MCU, etc.

I try to keep it pretty, uh, macho at work, though. Like "Oh yeah, I was totally ICING some bandits in Skyrim last night with my BABE Aela hur hur hur." rather than what I'd prefer to be talking about, which is always something awful like how cute I think Athis is.

The only obvious show of my fannishness that I regularly wear out is proably just obscure enough that people don't immediately connect it - that is, I have a black leather cuff with geometric knotwork on it. It's Hobbit merch, Dwarven. I suspect most people would just look at it and think "Huh, wrist cuff."
