BMI wank is my favourite wank. Sure, muscular body types break it. But your doctor isn't going to look at a shredded weightlifter with 11% body fat and go OMG LOOK HOW MUCH YOU WEIGH YOU'RE OBESE BECAUSE ~~BMI~~

But you're not a shredded weightlifter. You're just fat. BMI works fine for you.

The most legitimate complaint against BMI I've heard is from friends of east asian ancestry... but they complain the other way around, that the indicated range is centered slightly too high for their builds. lol

Interestingly, they're actually physiologically correct. There are currently a lot of arguments being put forth that the normal BMI range should decreased by 1-2 points because of the increased tendency for East and South Asians to store intra- and extrabdominal fat rather than storing fat on the hips and thighs (which is a risk factor for diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerosis).

The BMI for overweight for an Asian person may legitimately be too high! Science!

I know, that's why I said it was the most legitimate complaint I've heard :)

I just think it's cool lol. It also makes me wonder if the same argument might be made for other ethnic groups that appear to be more susceptible to metabolic disorders.

Or maybe it's just those pansy, weak Asian enzymes that are at fault lol. I mean, come on, step up your game guys.

I'm Australian, and on Aussie BMI calculator sites I'm sure I've seen that the range might not be appropriate for South East Islander people (it might be higher for them). Either that or waist circumference metrics. ANyway' interesting.

Re: Dumb opinions

And that's a widely acknowledged issue! Based on population data the "normal" range of BMI was shifted down when I was last there (2015) to start at 16.5, rather than 18.5. And the "obese" category started at 27.5 rather than 30.0. I don't remember the rest, but they were all shifted accordingly.

That was based on hard data demonstrating both that health risks associated with obesity manifested at lower BMI than North American/European populations, and that they did not suffer the effects being underweight until their reached lower weights than their Western counterparts. Population groups have varying physiology. *shrug*

People in Japan are fucking skinny, yo. My BMI was 17.1 the last time I was there and I felt normal. Nobody said a word about it. As soon as I got back to Canada: HOLY SHIT YOU'RE A SKELETON.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. The lol was because the legitimate complaint is the opposite of all the nonlegitimate ones where people complain that BMI doesn't make them fat. If anything on a world average it's skewed too high. lol

That's because you were a skeleton. You were underweight af. I hate to ruin your weeaboo dreams but you are not Japanese.

Yeah, I know that. The doctor knew that. He was the one dude to be like "eat more food".

Of course he didn't test me for anything, and when I told Matt about that he facepalmed so hard

Re: Dumb opinions

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-10-30 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
...I am pretty sure Japanese doctors in general just have no fucking clue how to treat anyone who isn't Japanese. I sure had my share of laughs with that while I was there.

Matt's facepalm was legit. You could have had the beetus or a fucking thyroid tumor or something and you wouldn't have even known.

I was cut af though and it was preetttty obvious it was the result of exercise, so I don't think he was too concerned.

Re: Dumb opinions

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-10-30 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Cut af compared to an Asian maybe. You were still a hungry skelly by whitey standards.

Re: Dumb opinions

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a white Canadian, my BMI is 17.9 and has been at or around there for years. I don't diet, I exercise a bit but not as much as would be good for me, and while I'm fairly happy with my body, I'm honestly a little bit "skinny fat" (i.e. I carry a bit of unnecessary jiggle around my middle).

Believe it or don't, but it is a fact that there are people out there who are just naturally very slim and light. Not hungry skeletons, or whatever.

Frankly, I'm 5'8" and when I was 135 - 140 pounds for a while in my early 20s, I felt overweight. And I don't mean my body image suffered. I mean I physically felt less healthy than I do at 115 - 120. I know this is far from being the norm. I have friends who are the same height as me but would be sickly if they weighed what I weigh. But the reverse is also true: I would be distinctly unhealthy if I weighed what they weigh quite healthily.

SA

If I'd been aware ten minutes ago that you two know each other in real life, I probably wouldn't have bothered to leave this defensive, you-are-wrong comment. It seemed like you were being kind of a jerk, herpy, but it was actually just a tone/context issue.

Yeaahhhhhh...

Maybe read the entire thread next time?

Wow. So you actually are kind of a jerk. Good to know. I mean, so that I don't waste my time giving you the benefit of the doubt in the future.

Re: Dumb opinions

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-11-02 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're the one being the jerk here. Seriously.

I'm fully within my rights to be offended that you'd decide to chastise me out of nowhere for being "wrong" while I was clearly having a friendly conversation with someone I'm familiar with. Because... why, exactly? Your opinion of me is that I'm a "bad guy" and it's your moral duty to prove that I am at every opportunity?

You don't get to go "oh you're a jerk herpy" because I'm not 100% happy that you wrote a diatribe accusing me of being unfair or having some kind of bias toward people with an underweight bmi. You were the one being rude. You're still being rude.
