Or maybe your whole operation kind of sucked

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You didn't "publish a book." You put it on Amazon, which isn't exactly "look I have it printed buy it at B&N." Good on you for finishing it but this isn't a huge deal.

Is it shitty erotica? It's shitty erotica, isn't it? Listen: a lot of people will tolerate something that is Destiel In Wub Gazing At Each Other For Like Fifty Pages but not give a fuck if it's suddenly original characters and the same level of writing. You also need a cover that doesn't look weird, a title that actually looks interesting, and a description that isn't "Desitel In Wub But Not Destiel Their Names Are Sebasitan and Aaddamm" or something like that.

On top of that, you're angry that they didn't REBLOG. You have to promote your own work!

This. I think author is either very young or very naive. Possibly both. This isn't a conspiracy. You actually have to do some work to promote your own novel.

This comment is exactly the sort of directness I would want in a friend.

Yeah, this is what bugs me. They're acting like they don't have to do their own marketing, and pushing something out on Amazon isn't the same as putting forth the effort to publish.

Personally, if you wrote shitty erotica and then slapped it on Amazon after being encouraged to write original, I wouldn't advertise, either. That just feels like you want the money and attention without doing all of the work involved, especially if the most you do to advertise is a post and then expect other people to market it for you.

They said they were hurt, didn't they? Not angry because you didn't do all their work for them...

And yet, they're complaining about 0 reblogs.

Yeah, no, they did minimum-effort and expected to make bank because their friends would do the hard work for them.

Oh, ffs - even if it's shitty erotica. It's a dollar.

Do you know how much boring stuff I've read for friends? Screenplays for webseries that never got made,two-page literary portraits of their father with daddy issues from front to back, "brilliant" magical realism stories that made no actual sense.

Look, I feel like if you're among writers (and I often am), it's sort of part of what you do in support (and, constructive criticism if wanted).

No, of course no-one's OBLIGATED, especially if it's money, but it seems like a small thing for a friend.

Not if you're poor as fuck. That $1 can sometimes mean I don't eat in bad months, and with Thanksgiving coming up, I'm saving the fuck out of money.

This is not the case for most people, though. I'm below the poverty-line income wise, and I could still afford that. If I had a friend who I knew I was worse off than me, I certainly would not hold it against them, but I have friends that I know splurge 50 euro's on a dinner out...so yeah, those people are out there, too.

And of course it's still not an obligation, but it seems pretty shitty not to.

I've always been around a lot of artistic people (my mom's family are musicians) and it's basically always been a thing that you do try to go to a concert/book reading/play every now and then.

Especially if you did do things like buy birthday presents, or go to their baby showers, or whatever in the past.

For the majority of people in first-world countries, a dollar is more symbolic than anything else.

But I bet that being poor as fuck means you don't go around telling people you're going to buy their work, right? Because you know that you can't afford it, and there's a good chance you won't be able to and you don't want to disappoint a friend, right?

I'm not going to fake interest in something I don't care about because I don't want my friends faking interest in something for my sake. OP's friends may very well have been interested in reading OP's novel until OP published it and they realized it wasn't their jam.

It's not about faking interest. I'd find it hard to believe they had no idea what it was about if they were supportive of OP writing the damn thing.

Also, with books you can't really know unless you read them (unless it's like a erotica thing with a fetish you don't care about).

eh, i'd disagree with that. personally, there are some genres i'm just not into - for example, dystopian stuff just isn't my thing. i've tried to read multiple books involving those themes and they just don't do it for me, no matter how interesting the overall plot or characters are. i don't care how you try to sell it to me, i'm not going to read it because i know it's not something i like.

Okay, so maybe they put it on Amazon, you know, the biggest online retailer of E-books and possibly paper books too. That has a very handy FREE "Createspace" to make print books if they want. And hey, if they don't do Kindle Unlimited or Kindle Select, they can hop over to Draft2Digital or Smashwords and get posted onto B&N too! And iBooks and Kobo...
