Re: Or maybe your whole operation kind of sucked
Do you know how much boring stuff I've read for friends? Screenplays for webseries that never got made,two-page literary portraits of their father with daddy issues from front to back, "brilliant" magical realism stories that made no actual sense.
Look, I feel like if you're among writers (and I often am), it's sort of part of what you do in support (and, constructive criticism if wanted).
No, of course no-one's OBLIGATED, especially if it's money, but it seems like a small thing for a friend.

And of course it's still not an obligation, but it seems pretty shitty not to.
I've always been around a lot of artistic people (my mom's family are musicians) and it's basically always been a thing that you do try to go to a concert/book reading/play every now and then.
Especially if you did do things like buy birthday presents, or go to their baby showers, or whatever in the past.
For the majority of people in first-world countries, a dollar is more symbolic than anything else.

Also, with books you can't really know unless you read them (unless it's like a erotica thing with a fetish you don't care about).

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 02:51 am (UTC)(link)eh, i'd disagree with that. personally, there are some genres i'm just not into - for example, dystopian stuff just isn't my thing. i've tried to read multiple books involving those themes and they just don't do it for me, no matter how interesting the overall plot or characters are. i don't care how you try to sell it to me, i'm not going to read it because i know it's not something i like.
