Some of us try to say what we mean and follow through? I don't know when it became "normal" to tell people stuff just because you think it will make them feel good.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
My point is that yes, the vast majority TRY to do that. In my experience people will rarely say that kind of thing while also pulling a Dr Evil face and thinking "Haha, I convinced the fool!!!" They have the best of intentions. And then sometimes it doesn't happen.

But a lot of people tell others something to make them feel good. It's not some kind of dastardly manipulation, it's because most people deep down want to please others and be as nice as they can. They don't do it out of malice. It's not 'fake insincerity'. It's a human social interaction as old as time.

If you read my longer reply to this post, you can see I hope the OP can be philosophical about this and get past it. But I disagree very much with everyone in the thread who is acting like the OP was a fool for thinking their friends meant what they said.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I disagree with that too. I think both extremes are silly. The OP is justified in feeling hurt but their friends are not responsible. Both can be true.

For the record, while some replies are acerbic, I don't think I've seen anyone saying the OP is a fool for thinking their friends meant what they said. I mean, shit, they probably DID mean what they said at the time.

NAYRT I think many here think OP is a fool for lashing out at her friends who hasn't done much wrong: they were just trying to be nice.

Let's hope it will turn out a useful lesson for OP.

OP never said they lashed out. Projecting much?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
They're doing exactly that right now, though.

DA

I really have no idea what you're trying to say here; you were the one who first mentioned projecting

You're not making sense and I have second hand embarrassment right now

I don't know when it became "normal" to tell people stuff just because you think it will make them feel good.

Where the fuck have you been for the ENTIRETY of human history? People want to make other people feel good. Occasionally it will be for selfish personal gain. Mostly it will be because people are misguidedly trying to be nice. This is not new. Neither is it a mortal sin. Sometimes it could be handled better, but shit, we all make mistakes.

Probably because it has always been so.
