I don't know when it became "normal" to tell people stuff just because you think it will make them feel good.

Where the fuck have you been for the ENTIRETY of human history? People want to make other people feel good. Occasionally it will be for selfish personal gain. Mostly it will be because people are misguidedly trying to be nice. This is not new. Neither is it a mortal sin. Sometimes it could be handled better, but shit, we all make mistakes.
