Can't speak for fandom/internet friends, but if someone I considered a good friend wrote a book, I'd damn well read it and pay the dollar. Because, you know. Friendship.

I would too, and I have. I consider it another form of emotional support, one that may mean a great deal to my friend and that only costs me a dollar. It's excellent value for the money, because there are only so many things you can buy with a measly dollar that makes someone that happy. Why wouldn't I do that for a friend if I can afford it?

Me too. I mean - is this actually too much to ask of an actual friend? Ninety-nine cents and the time it takes to read the book? I hate to think so.

OP, for what it's worth, I totally would have bought your book. Congratulations on publishing your novel and I hope you get some good feedback from other sources.

I paid the few quid each time but never actually read the books. I love my BFF but she's a shit writer and I just don't have the time to read her poorly written books about bland characters going gay for each other and living happily ever after in seme/uke bliss.

Seems right on par with the people saying "I'd totes read that!" and then don't do it. And you're both perfectly good friends! Friendship is not about equal exchange, it's about caring about someone and showing it. There might be more sides to the truth, but that's how it is for everybody (even if someone on this thread won't admit it).

Oh yeah. My best friend published a book about baking. I don't bake. I can barely cook. I bought a first edition anyway, knowing it would collect dust on my shelf, and went to the signing event.

I also have friends who play music and you can bet I've bought tickets to their gigs despite privately thinking they're not that good.
