I read a right up on why the Pern world was actually really dark and backwards one time. Nodded a lot. Damned if I can find it again.

At the start of the series, Pern seems like a fantasy setting, but there's quite rapey factors involved in dragon matings (the dragons influence their riders to have sex and if that was two people who hate each other...).

The Tread situation is rather grim, at least during Theadfall - the years between tend to be less grim for most but potentially a problem for the maintenance of the weyrs as the holds grow less grateful of their defensive role.

Then it starts to become obvious in further books that Pern is in fact a sci-fi setting about a colony whose society was busted back to per-industrial by Thread.
