I'm not into bara, but I can see where you're coming from. I hear a lot of girls/women calling characters they like "bara" and when I look at who they're talking about it's just a normal guy who has any visible muscle. If that's what women think bara means there's no wonder there isn't much of it made for us.

A lot of webcomics that have huge-boobed girls in tight outfits also have shirtless guys with well-defined abs as an attempt at equality. Grrl Power is a typical example of the genre.

Bara-type/bishounen-type would be more interesting to me as a pairing but it's always bara/bara (what little there is always has two guys with the EXACT SAME BUILDS like the artist can't draw anything else) or bishounen/bishounen (with the same problem - sometimes they like to make one of the bishounen the "bigger" one but usually it means just literally bigger with the same exact same bishounen proportions + lol yaoi hands) and never a mix. I get it's different genres but actual variety within the same series would be nice.

...slightly OT bara rant aside, the closest I've found it gets to that in terms of animanga (speaking of both het and slash) is fan pairings in sports manga, as far as I've seen.

Yeah, I think if you want to see that kind of thing, you'll have to seek out specific series (esp sports manga, like you said). I think KNB is decently okay for this with Kagami/Kuroko and Aomine/Kuroko since Kagami and Aomine are pretty buff while Kuroko is more on the slender side. Unfortunately, the most popular pairing is still Aomine/Kagami haha.

In terms of het, I've read Guts/Casca doujinshi, but, yeah, dudes in hentai are THIN. Makes sense since why would you bother putting effort into a guy's body when all the focus is on the girl for straight men, but it's still sorta annoying.

The dudes are thin because they are supposed to be a stand-in for the regular male nerd to project himself on and Japanese nerds tend to be skinny more often than buff.

Okay?? I know that's not the main reason. I was just giving ONE reason. Besides, there's hentai geared toward straight men where the author does put some effort into giving the dude some musculature, even if he's not super buff. But those tend to be pretty ""high quality"" for hentai, meaning coloring and story arcs.

In any case, you're flat-out wrong if you think that isn't a consideration for artists. It's easier to draw a skinny androgynous boy and just tack on a monster cock. It's harder to draw a guy that's more built and proportional.

Of course, like you said, this also ties into easy self-insertion for Japanese dudes, but the fact that there are popular male hentai artists who draw more high quality hentai deviate from drawing twiggy dudes occasionally is proof that this isn't always the case.
