Conversely, I think a fanfic author with this attitude is admirable. Just remember that when you get fanfics based on your work, some, if not most, will totally fail to understand your story and get the characters completely wrong. Always keep in mind though, they aren't doing it maliciously, they just misunderstand the characters, even though they love them.

Yup.

And there's also the weird dis/compliment thing where your audience goes, "This character/relationship/story is cool, but what would make it SO MUCH BETTER is if it were kind of like it is, but also really different!"

I do this all the time. There is nothing wrong with doing this. But from a creator's perspective...it kinda does seem like more of a dis than a compliment.
