I secretly hope this will happen too, OP.

Honestly I'd just like this because it'd be super entertaining.

I have no aspirations towards acting, but if I were an actor, I hope I'd play characters people would write lots of smutty fic about (but not the kind of actor people want to talk to about their smutty fic).

You're not alone on that one. Plus all the pretty gif/icon sets (or w/e image/banners people make today) of you (looking fantastic, because you're in character) with whoever they skip your character with or by yourself.

Bonus points for fanmixes.

Yes :D. I'd be thrilled if this happened. It'd just be so cool to know somebody liked your story/characters enough to want to explore them further beyond the book itself.

Third rule of life as a writer: there's no such thing as making it; there's only working and not working.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't really make any sense. It's clear that OP has their own definition of "making it", and very few writers are going to insist that there's no significant differences between writing a novel that only a handful of people read and hitting the NYT bestseller list and selling the movie rights for your novel.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a very good philosophy to encourage writers to keep writing no matter what, but aside from that, "making it" is being successful - however the writer chooses to define that. So outside of a personal mantra to keep writing, claiming that there's no such thing as success seems a bit... well, maybe "naive" isn't the proper word, but that's close. People understand that there is such a thing as success, and they've likely given some thought to what it'd be like, or how they'd define it. So trying to placate someone like the OP who's clearly already done that with a generic motivational poster tagline isn't really going to work.

I can see this. It would probably be my gauge of having 'made it' as well.

The smuttier and more riduculous, the better!

Conversely, I think a fanfic author with this attitude is admirable. Just remember that when you get fanfics based on your work, some, if not most, will totally fail to understand your story and get the characters completely wrong. Always keep in mind though, they aren't doing it maliciously, they just misunderstand the characters, even though they love them.

Yup.

And there's also the weird dis/compliment thing where your audience goes, "This character/relationship/story is cool, but what would make it SO MUCH BETTER is if it were kind of like it is, but also really different!"

I do this all the time. There is nothing wrong with doing this. But from a creator's perspective...it kinda does seem like more of a dis than a compliment.

Me too! I'd even be happy with badfic, because I'd just be all "They like me! They really, really like me!"
