Dubs

(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone listen to movies/TV in languages they don't know?

Re: Dubs

(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I can only watch soccer of the announcers are speaking Spanish, and I don't know any soccer-relevant Spanish except "GOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!"

The Spanish announcers get so in to the games, it's great!

I strongly considered watching the World Series in Spanish, just to escape Joe Buck.

But then you miss John Smoltz!

Yep. I watch a lot of horror films in other languages. Mostly Japanese, Korean, and French films. I have subtitles as well since I don't speak those languages, so maybe that doesn't count.

But do you ever listen to foreign dubs for domestic films?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-11-01 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Sometimes but generally not for a whole film. I sometimes like to listen to a song in Disney movies in other languages.

The only way I could ever do that, would be if it was animation. Dubbed live action is an abomination.

Mostly Japanese and French shows, preferably with subs, but I can struggle through a French show without them. I'll listen to music in any language so long as I enjoy the sound.

I do this all the time. I especially like to listen to the dubs for actors who are really distinctive, like how they tried to capture Eddie Murphy in the Mulan dubs.

I'm currently listening to Clone Wars in Spanish and French, and it's interesting what words I can pick out and the timbre of the voice actors. Even not knowing what exactly they're saying, I know what's going on and the type of voice used and the emotion still come through, which is interesting to me.

That's entertaining @ Milan. Which ones are your favourites?

Of course.

Yes. We have a Chinese channel (both Mandarin and Cantonese) and I like watching the dramas and costume dramas they show. Also they used to have a learn Chinese show that I picked up a couple words and phrases from. And telenovelas are pretty good too, even if I can only understand every fourth word or so, ha.

We have one of those stations too. The dramas are only really interesting to us if they're historical, with lots of fun costumes, or with magic and/or wuxia. Modern melodrama = boring.

We used to get a station that broadcast NHK historical dramas WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES every Saturday, and we were very into them for a while. When tv went all digital though, our cable provider didn't have that in their package. We have Chinese, Indian, Pinoy, Korean, Armenian, and Arabic stations, but no more Japanese. Not a big Japanese community here, but I missed my dramas and the cooking shows (also with subs!).

Sometimes I put on Code Lyoko in Hebrew in the background. There are a couple episodes on YouTube and I just really enjoy it for whatever reason.

I also love listening to Disney/other animated musical songs in different language dubs, but I think everybody does that.

e: Also I will definitely watch a Japanese dub for any cartoon that has it. Gravity Falls in Japanese is so great.

Yes, all the time. Pretty much everything excepts shows for small children is subtitled here.

I do -- if not often. I recently watched The Devil's Backbone which was in Spanish, and I also enjoy Andrei Tarkovsky's films which are obviously in Russian.

I also once played through Metro 2033 in Russian with English subtitles. That was an experience.

No but I want the Witcher audiobooks in Polish. I would listen to those until I understood every single word.

I love to do it if the movie or show is in Korean. I know too much Spanish to get away with listening because I'll be translating in my head. Same with German and French and Italian.

Re: Dubs

(Anonymous) 2016-11-02 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hell no. I watch them with English subtitles if I can, even though I'm Swedish. I do want to know what's going down and I can't do that if I don't understand the language.

All the damn time. One, because I'm an utter weeboo; and two, because I often have auditory processing troubles and captions are useful as hell.

Since I really don't like dubs, I usually try to watch movies undubbed and with subs if I don't know the language. Makes it hard to watch movies in cinema but oh,well.

I really like watching all those multilanguage animated movie song video compilations.

I was forced to watch Advent Children in the original Japanese when it first came out, so I really can't stand the dub.

I voluntarily listened to Puella Magi Madoka Magica in the original Japanese.
