Re: What are some local ballots you are voting on and concerned about?
In the primary election, the question was worded, "Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to require that justices of the Supreme Court, judges and justices of the peace (known as magisterial district judges) be retired on the last day of the calendar year in which they attain the age of 75 years, instead of the current requirement that they be retired on the last day of the calendar year in which they attain the age of 70?"
Or basically, shall the mandatory retirement age for judges in PA be raised from 70 years old to 75 years old?
And the majority vote rejected it.
Now on today's ballot, the wording is, ""Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to require that justices, judges and justices of the peace be retired on the last day of the calendar year in which they attain the age of 75 years?"
There was a survey done that showed that most people who read that question didn't know that the current age limit was 70 and that voting yes would raise that limit -- they thought the question was asking to implement a age limit where there hadn't been one before.
So there no doubt will be a fuckton of people who didn't vote in the primary, and/or who don't know about the current age limit, and/or who aren't reading the question closely, who will vote "yes" when they would mean to vote "no" if they knew the whole picture. And of course, Republicans are behind the wording change because they are actual cartoon villains IRL.
