SJW culture is toxic. (I need to rant!)

(Anonymous) 2016-11-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Particularly on Tumblr Because you can be a hugely popular blog, but make one small mistake like using a word without realizing it's a slur or offensive, or like a person or a fandom pairing deemed problematic, and you go from popular to trash in the blink of an eye.

Sometimes I see SJW's tear into a blogger for an honest mistake and it's like you have to be perfect or you're a rape apologist, a racist or ableist or whatever. I have seen popular blogs lose thousands of followers for reblogging something "problematic" and it's not right.

SJW's say everything is "triggering" oh so conveniently whenever they're losing an argument or being proven wrong. White people are being made to apologize for being white as if all white people are to blame for racism, yet these people never clue in that they're becoming exactly what they hate.

SJW's make Tumblr toxic. I see them acting like that and want to say "go the fuck outside and help people IRL instead of pontificating behind a keyboard!"

I don't because it's not worth the struggle. I use Tumblr to connect with my fandoms, yet day after day my dash has callout posts or bitchfits over a pairing being problematic or a celeb is horrible - and I am just so tired of it.

SJW's are ruining everything and they can't even see the damage they're doing.

Didn't read the whole thing but I very, very, very strongly suspect that this is a problem with online communities and social media, not with SJWs specifically

Also, I think there are worse things right now than people on Tumblr being too absolutist about racism, for God's sake

"Didn't read the whole thing but I very, very, very strongly suspect that this is a problem with online communities and social media, not with SJWs specifically"

Yeah, I wrote about it yesterday - people who call themselves "anti-SJWs" can be just as toxic, and as rigid and close minded and quick to anger. I've seen them rip into people for sarcastic or joking comments that they interpreted as SJW behavior, and it sometimes only takes one wrong word.

Any group that thinks they're on the right (as in correct) side and spends all their time policing other peoples' behavior without looking at their own can end up like this.

And I think most popular online social tools tend to incentive this

It's kind of strange; I was following this one blog and then suddenly they write an essay bemoaning a throwaway line in an episode, whining about 'too girly' and 'too feminist'. It was weirdly touchy.

I have to agree with this, after a few anti-SJW smug post-election videos I saw on Youtube laughing about how Clinton voters have been reacting.

Re: SJW culture is toxic. (I need to rant!) OP

I'm not an anti-SJW. I'll stand up and say something if I see blatant racism, ableism, etc. Disagreeing with a nonwhite person or coloring a POC character "too light-skinned" because the artist did the art by memory is not racism. Telling a person who self diagnosed with BPD that mental illness isn't a get out of jail free card isn't ableism.

That's what happens on Tumblr. I witness more drama on Tumblr than I did on LJ or web forums.

Bullshit like "there are worse things" is shitty to say. I see those worse things because of my job. I help domestic violence victims. I have seen horrible things. Half the SJW stuff I see called "abuse" is teens saying their mom won't let them play Pokemon Go or something, and I can't even...

I know absolutely that there are people who are abuse survivors on the site. Unlike the SJW's, they aren't so "look at me!" about it. They're pretty frank like "this is what happened" if they talk about it at all.

Btw I leave my Tumblr inbox shut off, and responding to a post without reading it is a good way to look ridiculous.

I just read it and I didn't change my opinions.

I'm not denying that people say stupid shit. I'm saying that neither saying stupid shit nor having toxic behaviors is unique to social justice people on Tumblr in the contemporary web. Did LJ and forums have different modes of interaction? Yeah. That was also a different generation of social media technologies with a different underlying structure.

One thing that really got me on a forum I was on was a teenager saying that her father wanting to check her phone because he had suspicions that she was on drugs or something (I forget what it was, but there was at least a reason given) was abuse. And every single person commenting agreed that it was abuse and that the teen should get help from someone.

For a parent checking the phone that they paid the bills for and that they had a reason to suspect something was happening with. WTF? I have worked with abused women and children before and that just really bothered me.

Learn to curate your dash better. You're constantly seeing toxic posts by toxic people because you keep adding toxic people. Stop doing that, cull the ones you have added, and your experience will be much better.

I have started unfollowing people as soon as I see the SJW callouts and fights on my dash. Blogs that seem decent turn into cesspools of trash. I mostly follow aesthetic fandom blogs, pairing blogs, fanartist's blogs and fanfic rec blogs. Sometimes they go months of just gifs, aesthetic posts, fanart, pairing stuff or fanfic recs, and then boom the SJW stuff starts.

I've quit surfing tags because of shipping wars and drama. I deal with peoples' drama IRL enough, I get online to escape it.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-12 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you're able to escape it, but why would you intrinsically expect people to be any less dramatic online than off?

This is what I do. As soon as I see any crazy SJW-y fights or callouts or whatnot, goodbye. And if I see any of that BS in tags that I like to frequent, I often block the offenders. It makes my Tumblr experience so much nicer.

Yeah i'm lost. "If people didn't want to be treated like human beings, the alt right would have been stopped"?

it befuddles me when people believe that those people can be reasoned with tbh.

You're acting like this is some brand new thing that someone FINALLY said. People have been saying it. For ages. But everyone acts like the latest person to say it is the first.

"go the fuck outside and help people IRL instead of pontificating behind a keyboard!"

I hate this .............

People can be educated on the internet, and if it wasn't for said internet, people would not be as clued in as they are these days.

go volunteer? absolutely, but lol acting lke reading about sj on the internet and educating other is the the worst thing? no. there's going too hard and there's getting defensive because someone told you you were wrong.

& after the election yeah excuse me for not really feeling empathy for white people as a whole.

The internet is an amazing platform for education. That has nothing to do with the topic at hand, because people wrapped up in Tumblr callout culture don't educate. They in fact flatly refuse to educate, and react to questions with further vitriol. Unfortunately, someone at some point introduced them to the phrases "I'm not here to educate you" and "do your own 101 work first", and they never took the time to actually learn when those phrases are applicable.

(Here's a hint: if you are the one engaging the other person - and yes, putting someone on blast qualifies as engaging - they aren't applicable. If you don't have the time, energy, interest, or knowledge to explain your premise, then you don't engage someone on a topic. It doesn't matter how close it is to your heart, or how well-known and discussed it is in your particular circle.)

From an LGBTQ perspective, tumblr is pretty much crap for education or organizing. Trying to search by keywords is marginally better this week because of the election, but most of the year it's more than 80% shipwars and community infighting via harassment blogs. Searching twitter will get you better news articles, while /r/lgbt and /r/ainbow regularly hosts better discussion.
