Maybe he has nasal breathing problems? My mouth is probably almost always open because I fucking breathe through it, okay!

Have you had a doctor look at it? There's both medicines and surgery that could help you with that you know.

I'm terrified of nasal surgery, ngl. :/ I've seen all these 'they fucked up my nose!!' stories that even though I know that surgical failures are a minority.

Or an overbite? My teeth shut but my lips don't naturally close. I have to put a lot of awareness into literally keeping my mouth shut.

This. Only despite orthodontic intervention my teeth don't even close properly so my lips don't close within a MILE of properly without me putting a lot of awareness into it.

Actually after I posted my comment I realized that my teeth don't usually close all the way on their own either. I'm totally the same as you -- all that headgear and rubber bands and very little difference made. (Although tbh I wasn't as good at using my headgear as I should have been.)

I breathe through my mouth a lot too. Allergies, that I only take medicine for if they get really bad, mostly because I'd rather deal with my nose being a little stuffy or runny than be medicated all the time.

I've had the surgery and it didn't help.

So they prescribed me drugs.

Steroids, which you can't take indefinitely, for an indefinitely occurring problem - which you take by inhaling them, which I cannot do.
