I understand where you're coming from anon--especially as during this time period, Philadelphia ( Declaration of Independence and all the other stuff that came out of the Congress) and Boston(Boston Massacre, Tea Party,) were both larger and more directly involved in the events leading up to the American Rev

In fact, the New York delegates abstained from the initial vote on independence at the 2nd Continental Congress. (Which is my mom--a Philly native--always complains when the New York fireworks get the most screentime on 4th of July, cause they didn't vote to go here at first). NYC's greatest contribution was being a coveted military target by both sides and being the home terf of some of it's ket players.

But history and personal biases aside, I understand why the line is in the song. It appeals to the modern conception of NYC as the cultural center of the U.S. (if not the world), as well as Broadway sensibilities, plus the characters singing it would probably have the same pride in their city. Plus, it goes along with the "hip-hop" and rap conventions.

And honestly, it's a tiny little gripe that I can easily overlook, cause my little history nerd self is just so excited that people are getting into the Am. Rev (my favorite time period) because of Hamilton. And my petty, Adams-stanning self is also happy that people are realizing just how much of a tool Jefferson was. :P
