Hope you don't have any apples in the fridge!

OTOH I'm guessing you know how much lilies hate heavy clay.

AYRT--it was unplugged and had nothing in it until I converted it into a bulb fridge. And yeah, definitely no ethylene gas to rot the bulbs! If I can get sweet violet or wild strawberry seeds maybe I will stratify some of them too. At least it won't bring the electric bill up by more than a dollar or so since I'm only gonna open it to take the bulbs out and then it'll stay unplugged until next year. And I actually had some trumpet lily bulbs directly planted in clay; they did okay but never topped 3 feet and may not come back this year because of the fucking drought. I'm hoping they'll do better in pots. Our water restrictions allow watering trees, fruit and veggies, and any stuff in pots (including ornamentals) whenever they need it. Flowers or other landscape stuff in the ground is only supposed to be watered five minutes a day, twice a week. And that's five minutes of hose time total, not per plant. I've lost a few rosebushes to drought but on the other hand the ones that hang on are tough, I have a white one that smells awesome and is trying to eat a corner of the house.

Can you improvise a drip irrigation system for them? I've used gallon milk jugs--you punch one or two tiny holes in them, then fill them up and place them among your plants. The water gets released slowly, right into the soil. Or will that get you in trouble too?

Also, I forgot to add that enriching the soil with organic material will enhance its permeability and water holding capacity. Of course clay has high water holding capacity, but the particles are so tiny that they hold the water that's adsorbed to them much too tightly for it to be readily available to plants.
