Who was your favorite teacher in school? Why?

Who was your least favorite? Why?

My least favorite was the heavily obese gym teacher in seventh grade who was also the art teacher, who gave me a C (I was a straight A student) and told my parents at parent-teacher conferences that I looked like I was lacking vitamin D. Then the next day at school, she didn't even know my name. It was such bullshit.

My favorite gradeschool teacher was maybe the English teacher who had that trolly persona as he'd try and push us into making good arguments and not falling into cliches. He acted sort of had that "look what a dick I am!" public persona when he was deep down a nice guy. He challenged us a lot with the ethical dilemmas and such of the books we read.

My favorite law school professors were my criminal law professor and my immigration law professor. The crim professor was just really nice and awesome and told great stories and was really knowledgeable. And my immigration professor was both brilliant and passionate about the subject.

Least favorite would probably be my administrative law professor. She was just really dull. Lectured from the textbook in a monotoned voice, never really called on people or interacted with the class at all.

Favorite: My high school history teacher. She was very animated, didn't bullshit us with cleaned up history, and served us red kool-aid to drink during the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan. It's thanks to her I have a six foot shelf crammed full of history books.

Least Favorite: 4th grade teacher. In hindsight I totally understand her frustration. I was easily the most hyperactive girl in that school, simultaneously the laziest, messier than most of the boys, and, well, every week ended with her upending my desk to clean out the garbage. I mean, other teachers had threatened to do that, but she went out and did it, which, when you're nine, is like "oh my god you are the worst person ever", but looking back when you're 33 is more, "I bet she was doing that to prevent mice infestations". Still.

Favorite . . . The programming/architectural design* teacher was pretty cool. He was good about pacing us and making sure we understood the material before going on to new things. The biology/health teacher was also pretty fun, and I give him credit for directly opposing our abstinence-only textbook.

Least favorite was the gym teacher for the other class, who substituted when our regular teacher was out sick. He mocked us, berated us, read the regular teacher's notes about which of us were failing and why out loud to the entire class (with names!), and generally made a complete ass of himself. This was the dumbfuck whose impatience and refusal to answer questions led to a student falling off the climbing wall and being seriously hurt.

*Drafting, but with a fancier name.

I loved my Chinese professor. I went to talk to her about my anxiety since it was making certain parts of the class difficult and she completely understood because it turned out she was writing a thesis on how anxiety disorders affect language learning. She let me do some presentations just for her if I didn't feel up to doing it in front of the class (though I did try to do as much as I could like everyone else).

My least favorite was a biology professor who was one of those who liked being intimidating. I really don't need teachers to go out of their way to try to be intimidating. I have a hard enough time talking to them already.

Favorite: Mr. Kelly. He was my English teacher for 11th and 12th grade. He made us write 20 page research papers each semester (first one on Amy Tan's novels, second comparing the themes of several Stephen King and Poe stories). I loved every moment of it. I loved spending days reading the books, hours researching in our library, writing the first draft for editing, re-editing the paper, and then the success of acing that final paper.

I never got the same sense of accomplishment and fantastic work during my four years of college.

Worst: Mrs. Mayfield in Spanish. She was such a terrible teacher. All we did was copy from the book. And she had a really short temper.

Favourite: My secondary school Irish/Geography teacher, because she ran the single most stable class in the entire school. You knew exactly what was coming every lesson, if you kept up the work you were absolutely fine, she could break ideas down into their simplest parts, and while she was amazingly strict she was fair. You literally always knew what you would get in her classroom. It was amazingly reassuring. Geography was my favourite subject in school, and while I never had any particular talent for Irish my results in her class were always a dead solid B, every time. Every test, all the way through to the end of school. She was the single most consistent teacher I ever had.

Least Favourite: I had a string of difficult German teachers in first and second year of secondary school. I swear, German was our school's DADA class. One of our teachers was increasingly erratic and forgetful, sometimes literally forgetting an entire week's worth of work. We later found out that she had a brain tumour, which was ... it was absolutely not her fault and we all felt amazingly terrible for dreading her class after learning that. Then her replacement was one of those teachers who had a habit of looming over your desk staring down at your work while you were trying to do a test, which did not in any way help with anyone's nerves.

One of my English teachers also called me a 'demanding little pipsqueak' once, but in hindsight I pretty much deserved it.

I have a lot of favorites. I might go with my junior year zoology teacher because she might have had the biggest impact on me in the long term though. I loved her class and found it really interesting and actually paid attention to all the lectures, which I didn't for almost any other classes. She inspired me in various ways and had a side of humor to boot. She was also the one who demonstrated to me that faith and science didn't have to be in opposition to each other.

Least favorite? My 8th grade gym/health teacher probably, because not only did I hate that class in general, but he was an old dude and he was really creepy to all the girls in the class. I know from talking to my classmates that most of us felt that way about him. He'd call us all "sweetheart" all the time, and some said he stared at others while they were climbing on the gym equipment but I don't know that he did it to me. He sang a song to me with my name in it a few times, no idea why he did that, or if he thought I'd like it, but it was weird as fuck.

Favorite teacher wasn't even one I personally had. She taught the fourth-grade class next to mine. But sometimes they'd open up the divider between her classroom and ours, and our classes would work together on projects and stuff.

And we did a writing project once, and she complimented me on something I'd written, and her compliments made me decide I wanted to focus more seriously on being a writer :).

There were many teachers that actually taught my classes that I loved, too, though.

Least favorite? Ehhhhh...my geometry teacher in high school was kinda...eh. Something about his teaching method just didn't really click with me and he wasn't the most helpful of teachers.

And then when I was in ninth grade, my social studies teacher actually asked me to hand over a notebook I was writing in one day 'cause I guess he thought I was writing something suspicious. I'd finished up my work for the class and was just spending the last few minutes doing a bit of journaling (in a separate notebook) to kill the remaining time, and I never caused any trouble for him in class, so his reaction struck me rather odd, but...*Shrugs*.

I hated most of my math teachers. Because they were fucking weirdos who were terrible at teaching math, didn't understand why I didn't understand, and then would get mad when someone said they didn't like math.

Favorite: My Kindergarten teacher and my Music teacher (until she got replaced with someone I really didn't like in 4th or 5th grade.)

Least favorite: My 4th grade teacher. In hindsight, I wish more teachers were like her (Stern but fair, didn't take shit, actually knew what she was talking about and TAUGHT, instead of just fucking off somewhere and letting us fuck around.) but at the time, she was the Wicked Witch, because she actually made us LEARN things.

My grade 2 teacher was a friendly young woman who, when she was staying a bit late, would let me play on the classroom computer. It was a really simple maths game with 8-bit graphics, on a Commodore 64.
