Yeah, Saturday Night Fever is a pretty grim movie. I had the same experience as you did, and I always find it weird when it's referred to as "lol disco movie" because... yeah, sure, but I actually do think it's supposed to be this working class drama about a pretty unforgiving world where the disco stuff is the only thing the characters look forward to.
I also think a lot of the misogyny is probably due to the time period, but the rape certainly is meant to be disturbing.
