The soundtrack was the best part of this movie, tbh.

With regards to the first part, the 70s were a different time

And with regards to the thing about finding Travolta hot, the 70s were a different time

There was a time when there was a lot of rape oin movies,n and more casually so. the whole exploitation genre was full of it, and that's roughly the same time period.

The 70's were such a shitty, exploitative time for women in films, I doubt anyone even batted an eye during that scene because it was just more of the same. I find the whole movie to be a depressing, uncomfortable mess tbh.

Eh. I think mannnyyyy people never saw those scenes. I think the PG-13 edit is probably way more popular than the uncut one.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-26 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this must have been the one I saw as a kid on tv, as I don't remember any such scene.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-26 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure the movie is supposed to be a depressing, uncomfortable mess - set to a fantastic soundtrack.

Thank you. It is drama, not comedy (which the other commenters here seem to think).

In my interpretation it's about the discordance between the noisy, glossy life one's supposed to have according to trends and real peoples' need of intimacy, respect and to be seen as themselves, not as objects or weighted against a trend's superficial values. That discussion is still valid today.

Our values will be harshly viewed by later generations too, for good reasons.

Agreed. Take "Diamonds are Forever" in 1971 where a woman gets choked by her bikini top strap or "Grease" where Sandy gets nearly raped by Danny at the drive-in.

Yeah, Saturday Night Fever is a pretty grim movie. I had the same experience as you did, and I always find it weird when it's referred to as "lol disco movie" because... yeah, sure, but I actually do think it's supposed to be this working class drama about a pretty unforgiving world where the disco stuff is the only thing the characters look forward to.
I also think a lot of the misogyny is probably due to the time period, but the rape certainly is meant to be disturbing.

I don't know what to tell you.

Maybe they're thinking of one of a million parodies (which usually only parody the dance scenes). Because the movie also has class issues, race issues, discussion of abortion, and suicidal themes.

As someone who grew up in that time period, I'm trying to recall if there was a "big" R-rated movie that didn't have a rape or attempted rape in it and I'm not recalling one off the top of my head.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-26 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Rocky was rated R, wasn't it? It didn't have any rape in it, or overtones or anything.

I saw it when it came out (I was 16) and it was on a double bill with Looking for Mr Goodbar. Unbelievably depressing.

Both Saturday Night Fever and Urban Cowboy were and sort of remain inexplicably (I say inexplicably because the stories weren't enough to rise above the dated elements) popular, but at least the music and choreography of SNF explains how it passed for fun. Travolta's character in UC was so despicable and the relationship so abusive I couldn't get through it.
