I blame the Mary stuff mostly on the writers not knowing what they are doing and the fact that I don't think there were ever intending on making Mary a hunter in the beginning.

Because yeah, it is really hard to work out how Mary could one day leave her family to hunt and then the next not even bother to fight a demon she knew was coming.
