LOL! My dad is a doctor and he never watches medical dramas for the same reason. Good luck on your exams, OP. :)

does he like Scrubs?

I work in a hospital and I just can't do hospital shows either. It's not just the inaccuracies that drive me crazy, it's that after spending eight hours there, the last thing I want to do is watch more hospital bullshit.

When my mother was working on her Physician's Assistant degree, she actually screamed out loud while watching House. It was hilarious.

love this secret

I can still watch television even with all the ridiculousness, I just either turn off my brain completely or laugh it off.

Like I love watching older episodes of SVU because it's so obvious the writers never had one clue about how computers/the internet works. I just laugh.

Same. I watch shows like "How to Get Away with Murder" or "Criminal Minds" and I know full well there's stuff about the way those professions are portrayed that's not at all accurate (and I don't even work in either profession!)..but so long as the characters and overall storylines are interesting, that's all that ultimately matters to me.

Course, I do think the fact I don't work in the fields those kinds of shows represent helps, 'cause I'm not looking at or familiar with the nitty-gritty details of those jobs. I can definitely see where it'd be harder for people in certain lines of work to avoid being all, "That's not how it's done!" at the screen.

That's a rather clever way to study for tests! I like that :)! Glad your exams are going well.

But I do sympathize with your struggle to be able to properly enjoy TV shows as a result, too. Blergh. I think nearly everyone's got that one thing they nitpick the accuracy of with shows or movies or whatnot :p.

I get like that with animals. Whenever someone calls an ape a monkey or a bat a rodent, I have to stop everything, explain that they AREN'T a monkey/rodent, then carry on.

Yes, it annoys people, but at least I can continue on enjoying whatever I'm watching/reading/playing without my inner "animal expert" raging and distracting me.

I mean, it sounds like a fun way to study!

I like your study method OP. I can only imagine how annoying a lot of TV and movies are with medical stuff if you actually know your shit about it.

I read somewhere that when giving CPR on tv, they instruct the actors to purposely do it with bent arms and exerting little pressure, instead of with locked elbows using your full upper-body weight like you're supposed to.

I have no idea if it's true, but I think it was because they didn't want kids seeing them give CPR on tv and them going and breaking their friends' ribs.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I have never seen kids giving each other pretend CPR. And certainly not with enough force that they could have hurt each other, even if they did it
properly.

I have read that actors do it wrong on purpose so they don't hurt their co-stars, but it must be possible to figure out a fake way of making it look right. You manage to have people fake beat each other up, but you can't possibly lock your elbows while doing fake CPR without breaking your costar's ribs?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-01 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Technically if you're doing CPR right, you're supposed to do it with enough force and fast enough that you could break someone's ribs.

I doubt it has anything to do with kids watching the show. It's probably because they don't want any of their actors to wind up with bruised or broken ribs if someone exerts too much pressure.

I love it when my doctor friend does it. Helps me through a lot of not great TV and movies and I learn a shitton of stuff I can use for my writing. And hopefully one day I'll be a writer who doesn't make doctors weep.

Have you ever seen the site Polite Dissent, OP? It's written by a physician looking at medical procedures in pop-culture, although with more of a comics focus, iirc. But House was definitely discussed (ooh, and it looks like he's got reviews of Dr. Strange and Pure Genius, now):

Me too, though depending on the show, I can switch off my 'real life' brain and just enjoy the ride.

The constant depiction of using a defibrillator during asystole is really starting to irk me though.

I hear ya, my family can't watch Backdraft without ripping it apart XD

I'm a medico and I also get annoyed at how flat out wrong so many tv shows and movies are. :)

(Anonymous) 2016-12-01 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
My sister's a nurse. Watching anything medical-related with her is hilarious.

I love this idea!!! We kinda half-do this with aviation things, in my family, and it's 100% why we don't watch all those lawyer shows that came out around the same time (parents are in aviation and law).

I still love watching those types of things, though, and picking out everything that's wrong with the premise, course of action, even the way people address one another based on rank and role.

Never would have thought of it for exams in those fields, though! :D

Can't watch utopia for similar reasons. Only it's too accurate...

I always end up screaming at the TV, especially if someone is running a code. Once watched a movie where they took a moment to bring the crash cart into the room, shocked the patient three times...and then started doing compression. I was so mad. Don't get me started on gloves or the amount of time someone will just rest food on their scrubs *shudder*
