I haven't seen the movie in a long time but i agree with this and would add - imo, he does act monstrous at the beginning because he has given in to being the monster everyone views him as. Very Richard III - everyone views him as a monster so, okay, might as well be one. But unlike Richard III, he learns he can be more than what everyone sees him as. He can choose to act human, and doing so becomes human again.

(Also for what its worth, I think in general applying modern morals to old fairy tales almost never goes well.)
