Of course it's Stockholm syndrome

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 12:26 am (UTC)(link)

1)She's being held captive, which is a cruelty unto itself. The people trying to excuse it remind me of those people who hold up happy slaves and kind masters on plantations

2)The servants literally gaslight her (yes this is part of stockholm syndrome) and tell her Beast is not so bad after getting to know him (after he's refused her a meal for like not liking what is happening). She is captive and they try to pretend she's a guest. Beast starts trying to behave nicely (though not very well) after Lumiere reminds him that they're all going to die

3)Beast frightens the hell out of Belle and tell her to leave in the forest, where they both know there are wolves. Beast saves her. Belle help him out, admits that he put her in danger and then thanks him for saving her from the danger he put her in

4)Beast becomes sincerely invested in being a good person because he believes Belle deserves it, which is a shaky as fuck ground for personality changes (often abusers are nice when they believe their victims ~deserved it). His purpose is still to get her to fall in love with him which he never explains.

5)He ~gifts her the library. Note: he already told her she could anywhere she wanted in the house, except the rose room. The servants already mentioned that she could go to the library (which she was interested in when they mentioned it, but which she never mentions again after he terrorizes her for going to the rose room). Belle takes this as an act of kindness which she wonders why she didn't notice before The implication is that his control over her environment is a gift he can bestow, and in response she wonders why she didn't see past him terrorizing her. Come the fuck on.

6)The dance is literally just so she can learn to love him, not for her pleasure alone. Again, she is unaware of this.

7)When he lets Belle go, he says that she's no longer his prisoner (, which means despite the time he told her to leave he still thought she couldn't go anywhere. She thanks him for her freedom. She thanks him for her freedom

8)She tells the townspeople that he would never harm anyone, despite the fact that he caused both her and her father harm by capturing them in the first place. He was nice enough to not be a dick and ~gave her her freedom, so...stockholm syndrome.

9)Belle comes back partially because she loves him and partially because, as she says twice the townspeople going after him/him dying is her fault. God that's sad.

Someone paid attention in Women's Studies 101! Props to your professor!

Unfortunately, the same someone didn't pay any attention in Psych 101, or said someone would know that Stockholm Syndrome isn't a real diagnosis.

I look forward, OP, to you getting a little older, with a little more experience of the world and realising that everything is not black or white, that there are so many shades of grey between the two extremes. You really are trying too hard to persuade everyone that your viewpoint is the only valid one and dismissing all the differing ones that have been put forth.

'Tis sad.

Except that the viewer does have some perspective from the Beast's POV and it's clear that his actions come from ignorance and fear, not some inherent malevolence. I'm sure your response would be some foaming at the mouth "HOW DARE YOU SUPPORT ABUSERS". I in no way support how he acted, but ya know, people can change? Abusive people are generally products of abusive, traumatic, painful upbrining. The Beast has been a total pariah for like ten years, and before then it sounds like he had no parental guidance at all. I mean seriously, where are his parents?! I don't think that Belle started off in a healthy relationship with him, but as time went on, he got his shit together and became worthy of her. Every human alive has been ignorant, we've all wronged others at varying points in our lives. That's why the story is interesting to us, because we can understand that struggle to do good, to be better people.

I'm a bit dismayed at all the people brushing off the points you're making here. I don't feel as strongly about it as you do, and I think it's not always entirely fair to hold fictional/fantastical scenarios to the same standards as we hold real life. But for the most part, I think your points are valid and deserve consideration.

This place is largely populated by 4channers at this point, so it's not surprising.

FS is so desperate to be ~not like the other girls~ (ie- tumblr) that they've gone full hog in the other direction to ridiculous levels of delusion

talking about how any fandom pertains to real life issues triggers the poor snowflakes

When the OP of this list starts off by accusing people of being Anti-Tom slavery apologists, there's no reason to address any of their points.
