this is a small one, but when a gay person is the only gay person they know. we band together irl.

D: I'm gay and have like no gay friends. I'm also a femme-type lesbian, so no one knows I'm gay. I need to cut my hair and wear more plaid or something..

I don't know how much those things actually matter when people are making assumptions about sexuality. I have never had a single person seem surprised to hear that I'm gay even though none of the lesbian stereotypes fit me.

I'm kind of amazed if that's true. Are you involved in the LGBT community? I've come to kind of hate it because of how stereotype-centric it is. The vast, vast majority of the time that I disclose my sexuality to gay people (men and women), they are shocked and say I don't look/seem gay.

Obviously it shouldn't matter, the whole point is that sexual orientation has nothing to do with anything else about you, but when you get any kind of "community", it comes with trends and styles. I just find it so frustrating.

I'm not really involved beyond just knowing other people who happen to be LGBT. I'm kind of amazed that no one has ever been surprised to hear about me either. It was pretty anticlimactic when I was stressing over telling my mom and then her reaction was "Oh. I kinda figured. I don't know why." And then with other people, over and over, I'd use the phrase "my girlfriend" and they would react like they weren't expecting anything else from me. I don't get it.

That really, really depends on the specific community. The LGBT group I joined in college bought fairly heavily into the stereotypes, in part because we were all trying to figure out our own identities and how to express them when a lot of us were only just beginning to feel free enough to express them. The part of the community I'm involved in now is both older and a lot more diverse, and doesn't really buy into the stereotypes at all.

Sometimes it's not even intentional. I laugh when people talk about how unrealistic it is for a group of friends to all be gay because my group of friends has less straight people than anything else and it's not even by design. We all came out at different times.

Stereotypes about who you hang out with are more often true than not IRL. Like, yeah, us Asians band together a lot, and when we do often we don't speak English and go eat Asian food.
