But why do we have to use "Happy Holidays" at all? What's wrong with "Merry Christmas"? Like I said, I'm not Christian and I don't give a damn if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas. I don't see what there is to get upset over that would make the use of "Happy Holidays" necessary over "Merry Christmas."

nayrt - Nothing's wrong with "Happy Holidays", and the advantage it has over "Merry Christmas" is that it has a broader application.

Also, it's not non-Christians getting upset over the use of "Merry Christmas". Nobody is getting upset over the use of "Merry Christmas". It's mostly Christians getting upset over "Happy Holidays". Are you really this obtuse or trolling?

The way I read it, ayrt is wondering why "merry Christmas" had to be replaced by "happy holidays" if no non-Christian ever made a fuss about it.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Why change it if it doesn't actually bother anyone?

I mean if you assume "bother" is synonymous with loud complaining, no it probably never did kick up a fuss. but it leaves people (mainly non-Christian children) feeling left out around the holidays. why not be more encompassing than not? it costs you nothing.

Nayrt
But the holiday in question, the one they are profiting off as well by having off-days etc. is Christmas. That's just a fact. It costs them nothing to get over that.

I agree with you about this, and I'm not just atheist, I also actively dislike organized religion in general. But I have never once felt that someone was saying "Merry Christmas" as a way of pushing their religion on me. It's simply a tradition and a well-wishing. And even if someone does mean it religiously when they wish me a Merry Christmas, that's their business and no concern of mine.

"Happy Holidays" is more inclusive, that's true, but it's also not as quintessentially traditional. I don't see why "Merry Christmas," as a benign cultural tradition, should have to be changed.

Pfft. typical ex-Christian atheist.

Happy Holidays has been around since at least the 1940s, so the "traditionalists" making a stink over it are truly more radical than the phrasing that they're protesting. And honestly, the US was founded by Puritans who made Christmas illegal. I'm not sure how hard you want to lean on tradition here.
