Have you ever accidentally killed an animal?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-04 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Cos I did today. I opened the back door to chuck out a spider that I'd rescued from my bathroom and when I closed the door I noticed that it was binding a bit. Being an old door and the weather being damp, I didn't think much of it. But then when I went outside later on I noticed a tail sticking out of the upper part of the door near the hinges. When I opened the door, there was a very squashed gecko in the door frame. I'm so sad and guilty about it, poor little dude :(

Yes, a cat once by being a very, very, very stupid child. :C

Apart from stepping on bugs unknowingly, no.

Poor gecko.

:(

I've both run over a squirrel and hit a bird with a car (can't be 100% certain the bird died, but it's likely it was too injured to survive). I also once accidentally chopped through a snake with a shovel. It was underground and I didn't know it was there until I started turning over the sod I'd just cut through. I also killed a frog in a similar way.

I hit a rabbit while driving on the highway a few years ago.
Also ran over a slug with my bike and was surprised at how guilty I felt about it. Digusted, yes, but guilty? Come on, it was just a slug... Nope, still sorry for the poor ugly squished thing.

This thread makes me wonder how many of us would eat meat if we had to kill the animals ourselves.

No judging, I don't care if you do or not, but it makes me wonder.

Personally I probably wouldn't be able to. I mean unless I had been raised that way or it was very... post-apocalyptic 'had to do it to survive' situations.

I mean, I don't even like eating eggs sunny side up because they're looking at me.

I grew up in farm country, so I don't see any issue with killing animals to eat them, but killing an animal accidentally when its death has no meaning or purpose is quite different than killing one in order to help keep yourself or others alive by eating it. Especially if you really can't salvage any benefit whatsoever from it being dead. Then it's just a sad waste of a living thing.

As someone who has slaughtered chickens and watched cows being slaughtered too, I don't have a problem with it.

SA

Lol sorry, I didn't mean for this to turn into a roll-call. By "us" I meant like all of humanity, not us here on FS. Though that's interesting too.

I've eaten rabbit and squirrel that i've watched get killed, and helped to skin them. I'm not a good enough shot to actually kill an animal that's not two feet from me, but i know i wouldn't (and didn't) have any issues cleaning and then cooking/eating the ones I did.

It's - really not that big of a deal. I'd have a harder time with slaughterhouse animals because they're mistreated and terrorized. One shot and they're dead deer or whatever, that's a lot different.

Besides bugs, not that I'm aware of. :( And I don't swat kill insects, even. I'm really soft-hearted about animals, so I know how you feel.

A squirrel once suicided under the wheel of my car.

No really.

Ran directly under the wheel, despite me slowing to let it pass. Wtf, squirrel? Why did you want to die?

Yup. A couple of goldfish, a lizard, and maybe a cat. Not in the same incident, well the fish in the same incident. Old Tank Syndrome is now something I know about.

Oh and also a pheasant which did not clear the front of the car quick enough. I feel particularly bad for that because I think it was an escaped fancy pheasant rather than your standard bred-to-be-shot ones.

Intentional kills are any number of mice, squirrels, rabbits, and wild boar. All but the mice and rats went on the table. In hindsight I should probably have stopped and picked up the accidental pheasant kill too. If it makes you all feel better the mice and rats that died in the traps went into a pit out back in the wood so that the scavengers could recover the biomatter.

Yeah, I've hit a rabbit, an armadillo and a cat while driving. Sucks big time, especially the cat, as it was in town and i'm sure it was someone's pet (no collar).

I've squashed several geckos in my lifetime. I also have a phobia of them so the first time it happened was utterly traumatizing. I still have to go get someone to clean up the carcass, I can't even look at it. Gtfo door frames you suicidal twits.

My mom ran over a baby raccoon once. In front of me. I shamed her for months.

I don't think I've ever done this, but MAN. Let me tell you. On my bike trip this summer a guy went to put on his cycle shoes and noticed they felt kind of weird and tight. But he just pulled the straps tighter and kept going. He was walking around for a while and noticed that it felt...kind of squishy. So he takes off his shoe, and turns out there was a frog in there?? That he totally smushed by tightening his shoes and walking around??? The worst thing I've ever heard of in my life omg

A skink, years ago. I threw a log on the fire and then realised too late that the skink was there. I was very upset and still am.

I keep chickens for eggs and once they're too old to lay they're basically pets. But one time a friend's neighbors who had chickens gave us two of theirs, and at the time I didn't know much about poultry parasites. I mean, the hens got them sometimes, but never badly, and so long as there were plenty of dustbathing spots for them to roll around in, they always cleared up.
I think one of the new hens was just fucked up from being kept in close confines--she'd had more room than a battery cage, but way less than my hens--and she was just crawling with mites. I tried poultry dust (basically a powdered insecticide) and that didn't really work. So I gave her a bath. Well, she wasn't used to being handled. Mine weren't either, but humans weren't the equivalent of horror movie monsters to them. This chicken flipped out at first, but then she seemed to calm down. Most of the mites ended up in the water and I wrapped her in a towel to dry off, she seemed like she'd be okay--and she shrieked and started thrashing, and choking, and she died. It took a couple of minutes and I spent the rest of the day having a shrieking weepy meltdown myself, because I'd literally frightened her to death, and I felt like a horror movie monster.

So many snails.

A couple of birds.
