Re: Have you ever accidentally killed an animal?

This thread makes me wonder how many of us would eat meat if we had to kill the animals ourselves.

No judging, I don't care if you do or not, but it makes me wonder.

Personally I probably wouldn't be able to. I mean unless I had been raised that way or it was very... post-apocalyptic 'had to do it to survive' situations.

I mean, I don't even like eating eggs sunny side up because they're looking at me.

I just find fried eggs gross.

I'm vegetarian because I know I couldn't.

I grew up in farm country, so I don't see any issue with killing animals to eat them, but killing an animal accidentally when its death has no meaning or purpose is quite different than killing one in order to help keep yourself or others alive by eating it. Especially if you really can't salvage any benefit whatsoever from it being dead. Then it's just a sad waste of a living thing.

As someone who has slaughtered chickens and watched cows being slaughtered too, I don't have a problem with it.

The worst part about slaughtering cattle is that when you put them through the run then as you stand there with the stungun and bolt pistol ready, they have this tendency to nuzzle your hand and try and lick you just before you do the deed. It makes you feel a right bastard at first. That is where you lose most newbie slaughter men right there on the first week. It takes a hard heart to get through that one. It ain't an easy job. Once you've bolted and hung them, the rest is easy but the actual slaughter itself is one that takes a special type of personality.

Ironically some of the kindest and most gentle men I've known have worked the cattle run and the gate. You'd think they'd be psychopathic bastards, but they are not. The real assholes tend to be in the gutting section, well, and management.

SA

Lol sorry, I didn't mean for this to turn into a roll-call. By "us" I meant like all of humanity, not us here on FS. Though that's interesting too.

I've eaten rabbit and squirrel that i've watched get killed, and helped to skin them. I'm not a good enough shot to actually kill an animal that's not two feet from me, but i know i wouldn't (and didn't) have any issues cleaning and then cooking/eating the ones I did.

It's - really not that big of a deal. I'd have a harder time with slaughterhouse animals because they're mistreated and terrorized. One shot and they're dead deer or whatever, that's a lot different.

I probably wouldn't, but I'm basically vegetarian as it is for that reason.
I agree though that killing an animal accidentally for no reason is different from killing an animal for food.

I would.

I'm lucky enough to be able to compartmentalize. I think for me it's because accidental deaths are senseless. There's no meaning or purpose for it except for a mistake.

Killing animals to eat, however, that carcass is going to feed me, my friends, my family, etc. I'd also be one of those who uses all parts of the animal I can, so very little goes to waste if I could possibly help it.

I honestly think more people could then couldn't, it's just that anyone who hasn't grown up on a farm really isn't used to that sort of thing because in this time in history we don't have to kill to eat. But humans have been doing it themselves for many, many years.

For instance I did not grow up having to kill animals for a living, so if you asked me to do it now, my instinct would be to say no. But I have a lot of family who were/are farmers and they still eat meat.

My Grandmother told me you really get used to it, she was even squeamish the first time she killed a chicken but she never stopped eating meat.

I know I couldn't. I've been considering going veggie for some time. Only thing is, I do most of the cooking in this house, and my partner would never give up meat. It's more convenient to just include meat in dishes for both of us and omit it when cooking just for myself.

So, uh, I guess my morals are trumped by convenience.

*raises hand* I wouldn't enjoy it, mind you, but I'm not one of those meat-eaters with illusions about where my food comes from.

I haven't eaten meat in over 20 years and yeah, I don't know how ling I'd have to starve before I could eat an animal--I'm closeish to the ocean so if I could catch them I suppose I'd start with fish; they're hard to cuddle and aside from some cephalopods don't seem intelligent, so I'd feel less guilty.

Octopi are actually pretty smart.

AYRT--that's why I said aside from some cephalopods--which include octopi, cuttlefish, nautilus(es?) (i?) (idk?) and squid. I still remember feeling sick watching my uncle eat a seafood salad that had baby octopi in it. I know they only live like 3 years anyway but it was so sad!

I have to work up the courage (and ensure I aim right) but I've done it. Fish and chickens mostly.

I only eat fish I have caught. I really object to the current large scale trawling.
